  • Discouraged! Talk to me about OWL! ;(

Ok! Tell me about owl. Check out my stats and it will explain where I am at. I need to get back down to 164. Have been on extended induction again since about April 1o th. I lost 10 pounds...that's it this time. I am in a stall. No pounds...no inches lost now in about 4 weeks. I am scared of OWL as the nuts rung is what helped me put back on some weight. However, induction is not doing the job this time. Does my body need to move on? I am scared I will gain if I head into OWL again. Yet, I hear others here who say that OWL gets them started losing again. How is this? Can someone explain the science behind all of this? Please? I am big into needing to know the how and why of things. I am VERY active. Lift weight 3X per week and cardio 45 min. 6X a week. Is my body hanging on to fat 'cause I am not feeding it enough? I eat enough to never be hungry, though. Just mostly protein and veggies. Please advise or give some encouragement....anyone. I need to get back down to at least 160. Thanks in advance guys!!!

Have you listed your actual food intake including quantities in the review my menu forum for some input? You said
I eat enough to never be hungry, though. Just mostly protein and veggies
maybe you are not eating enough fat?

Looking at your stats - you needed to lose about 22 pounds when you restarted? Having lost 10 pounds (nearly half of what is needed) in a few weeks was great!!

Staying on induction levels is not really recommended by Dr Atkins for those with your kind of amounts to lose, so you would be better off moving on and starting the OWL experiment so you will have plenty of time to see how you fare on the various rungs before doing as suggested and moving onto premaintenance when you have 5-10 pounds to goal!

You can always miss out the nuts rung if you want to Or try not using nuts as snacks (I assume that is where things went wrong for you) but merely as garnishes on salads and in recipes as nut flours?
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

I stalled for 4 weeks just as you have, then I started using fitday.com religiously. Once I was conscious of my ratios and calorie intake the weight started to come off again. You might try inputing your foods into fitday make sure you are eating enough calories for your BMR.

Thanks for the input. And for the reminder Lizellen that I guess I have done "OK" with a 10 pound loss. Guess I just figure it would come off as fast as it did when I had 100+ to lose. But that is not realistic!!! And Kisstuck...maybe I will try fitday, good advice! I think I will try that or the menu forum. Thanks guys!!

Re: Discouraged! Talk to me about OWL! ;(

OWL helps to "jumpstart" weight loss in some people because we consume slightly more carbs, meaning we have slightly less fat (from our foods) to burn off, so we're able to burn more off of our bodies.

OWL is nothing to be afraid of--you're actually at an advantage because you already know that nuts are a "trigger" food for you. I lost about 25 pounds on induction/extended induction, but I've lost OVER 50 POUNDS on OWL! I've worked my way up through the rungs as intended, and I foresee no problems continuing to eat this way! I never feel deprived because I have so many food choices, and I FINALLY feel like I know how to eat and feed my hunger, rather than feeding my emotions like I used to.

Thanks Julie! Your lookin' good. It is encouraging to know how much weight you lost on OWL, and that it can continue to come off. I had soooo much weight to lose that I stayed on extended induction for so long that it seems foreign for me to move up the rungs. And then, because the nuts threw my weight into a "tizzy" I think I panicked a bit. Thanks again for your sweet advice! I know I have to do this to be successful!

I am afraid of Owl too so I understand.. The thought of eating more food and losing still seems weird to me.. When I find that I am not losing for weeks then I will move on... I am a slow loser also..but its coming off and that is what matters..

My net Carbs everyday run around 30-40.
I'm really starting to show the pounds coming off.
I put on my jeans size 12 and they are baggy.
I put on my 10s and they are tight but they fit.
Everyone is saying I'm thinning out.
I feel that eating more vegetables has really sped up my weight loss.

Re: Discouraged! Talk to me about OWL! ;(

                        Dear Thin Is Possible:

It could be entirely possible that it is time for you to move onto OWL. You have so little weight to lose! To this end, it is a good thing that you know that nuts are a trigger food for you. You don't have to eat them just because you reach that rung. What I am trying to do in OWL, is add 5 net carbs of vegetables every two weeks until I find out what my CCLL is. Then maybe I will reconsider substituting 5 net carbs of vegetables for something else, like dairy or nuts. I am not sure my plan is stictly by the book, but it seems to be working for me.

Also, I cannot say enough about Fitday. It's fun to use and it really keeps me on track. It is useful to see how many grams of carbs I am eating per day, and I like the graphs. I highly recommend you get it. There is a free version online, but you can buy a more powerful version for really cheep.

Finally, have you taken your measurements? If you haven't already, please do so. You may be really surprised. I've lost only lost like 4 or 5 pounds in the whole month that I have been doing Atkins. This includes induction. But I have lost 2% of my body fat. I've gone from a tight size 12 pants to loose size 10s. People are noticing, and I haven't even been working out that much. Fittogether.net has a good program that estimates your body fat percentage from your measurements. I recommend that too. I have found it very encouraging as the scale has been anything but encouraging for me.

                        I hope this helps!
