  • Loss then gain after week 1 of OWL Rung 1

After my 5 weeks on induction, I finally decided to start on OWL. So I was thrilled that the scale finally moved after adding the extra veggies. I went from 213 to 210 in just a week. Then, over the weekend I continued to stay with my 25 carbs, including 3.5 cups of veggies, etc and found out that I'm back to 211.2

What happened? I know our weight fluctuates from day to day but come on. That is too much. Is is possible that I actually gained more than a pound in just a couple a days. I followed the plan to the T, excercised as usual, drank over 100 oz of water, took my supplements as usual. How do I explain this?

You know, if you look at the over all picture, of which I like to do because it's a great thing to look back at the progress, you've lost 20 pounds since April...230 to 210! That's awesome!!!

Yes there's flucuation with exercise and water intake, especially for women during certain times of the month (really bites sometimes). You may just give the OWL rung a few more days and see if it's not the extra veggies (or what type of veggies) might be causing the problem. Oh, and food can weigh as much as 2-5 pounds in your body, crazy ain't it?

I would love to see you keep going and focus on the measurements while you're exercising and drinking your water. Just know that you're doing a great job!

    Best wishes!

Thank you so much for the encouragement. I ate the same veggies for about 4 days in a row.

      2 c. Romaine Lettuce
      1 c. Red Sweet Pepper
      1/2 c. White Onion

I also ate beef 3 days in a row? Could this be it? I noticed that I usually either don't lose or gain after eating beef. Does this happen to others?

Unless you've eaten an extra 4000 calories, your gain is NOT fat. It's most likely water, (muscles retain water, fiber retains water, TOM makes us retain water) or it very well could be the weight of the foods you've eaten. And Miss Elsy, why are we weighing ourselves more than once a week? Pick one day, stick with it, and weigh only on that day. Weight fluctuates, and I would suggest weighing only once a week. The plan works! Stick with it!

Hey Julie. You know that I lost 65 lbs a few years back with Atkins but I never really followed the OWL Rungs the right way. As you know, I gained it all back and now this second time around I want to do it right. But when I see that much gain, I panic and immediately want to cut back. That's why I had the urge to weigh myself almost everyday on my first week of OWL.

It's probably hard to understand but once I kow I got it then I'll go back to weighing myself once I week the way I did in Induction. But you're right, I gotta stop doing that and just keep focused on everything else but the scale.

So then you're right about some food weighing more. That's probably what's happeining to me when I eat beef. Thanks for the explanation.

It's tough isn't it? The scale is mean and you immediately start to panic--believe me, I still have twinges of this, but I know that one week of fluctuations isn't going to kill me because this is a lifelong thing. My weight will always probably fluctuate, but as long as it's a DOWNWARD trend, that's what counts. Take for example, 2 weeks ago I weighed in at 186, the week after I weighed in at 187. I'm eating 85g a day, but I've come this far to know that a week is NOTHING--that gain could have been "nature" not taking it's course, it could have been water from dehydration, it could have been water from muscles/strength training, it could have been water from salty foods, OR it could have been that I'd found my CCLL (but I knew it wasn't because I LOST INCHES!) There's no way to tell in just one week. SOOOOOOO as scary as it might have been, I stuck with my 85g and at my next weigh-in I was down to 185. Patience is the key. Stick with it, and have patience. A stall is defined as 4 weeks with no loss of pounds or inches--so really, you should not be alarmed until 4 weeks have passed! Sometimes our bodies just need time to adjust.

You're right again Julie. This is for a lifetime and not just because I want people to be impressed at how much better I look even before I got pregnant or because I want to fit into my old size 10 jeans that have been sitting in my closet for 2 years now. I have to right that down and post it everywhere to remind myself that the downward and steady loss is what counts at the end. Wow 85 grams is a lot if I see it from where I'm at now. I can't wait to be there. LOL! But if I think of how much I was eating before Atkins I must of been the hundreds

              I'll get better Julie. Thanks.
