    Hey everyone,

I'd be very interested to hear what you all get up to with oats. Any nice recipes, etc much welcome.

Also I wanted to say - because portions of things on rung 9 are small how do you incorporate them generally? Tehy aren't like a portion in a pre-Atkins way so how do you get them in?

Also (sorry, I alway have more than one question and lots of sub-questions) how often do you eat these foods?

    Ta

    Re: Oats

Baarb, I'm not sure if I'm "technically" doing this correctly and might catch some flak for it...

I know that portions are supposed to be in 5g increments. However, I'm eating 85g a day and still losing, so I do "double up" and have 2 servings of things so I can get to 85g.

I don't eat whole grains everyday (I feel better without them), but if I have oats, I have 1/4c. dry of McCann's Irish Oatmeal. This comes out to 11g net carbs. I eat it with protein powder, strawberries, and pecans. I don't recommend the protein powder for everybody of course, and if you're eating some sort of meat with it, you don't need it. Oats are VERY filling!

      Re: Oats

I'm not at oats yet but I gotta back Julie up on the doubling up......I routinely eat 1 cup of strawberries a day and I'm still losing....I figure I certainly didn't get fat eating strawberries I do eat them with 2oz of heavy cream that I then whip. I find that is more than enough so today I'm going to cut back the oz before I whip it.

Can't wait to see some ideas for oats though! I was thinking maybe in a fruit crisp? Blackberries with an oat and butter crumb topping?

        Re: Oats

        Hey Julie and Skinnymom,

Oops I must admit I am totally guilty of doubling up too - I tend to add things in 0.25 cup, as long as it's in my daily carb allowance. In fact I had kind of forgotten about the 5g thing. o,12 cup of oats would be tiny! Maybe I should remember this though as am in a (nearly fully official) stall.

Skinnymom - yeah, a fruit crisp thing would be very gorgeous.

          Re: Oats

I never would have eaten a fruit crisp in my previous life lol but I think once I get to that stage I will LOVE something like that! I totally adore having strawberries and cream for dessert and the old me would have turned up her nose at that

Let us know if you make one how it turns out! I wonder if Linda's site has any recipes....off to check!

            Re: Oats

You could make an EXCELLENT crisp topping with almond meal/flour, oats, splenda, and butter. Just substitute almond flour (or any other nut flour, really) for the wheat flour. This is totally unrelated, but I made a gorgeous coconut flour shortcake yesterday, and it was awesome! It was about 1.5 inches high in an 8" cake pan, I divided it into 6 servings (probably could have done 8 servings!) and it came out to 3g per piece! It was heavenly...like a cross between a macaroon and shortcake.

Yum, all sounds lovely. You got a recipe for that shortcake? Not sure if I could get hold of coconut flour though...

                Re: Oats

Ooo that sounds yummy! I just found a recipe for banana nut muffins on Linda's site and they are legal for me now! I need to go buy some almond flour, banana extract and golden flax meal and I'll be having me some muffins - whoo hoo!!

I bet you could add oats into a muffin recipe too and it would be really good!

                  Re: Oats

I used/use oats as porridge, as 'breading' (mixed with ground nuts), as a topping for fruit desserts (also mixed with nuts), and as a thickener( use oat flour or grind rolled oats in a food processor).

There's also a Scottish recipe called "cranachan". It's toasted oats, with whipped heavy cream, fresh berries and a slosh of whisky. It sounds weird, but it's pretty nice and it's a light type of dessert.

Hey eeveryone thanks for all the great ideas - I'll be writing these out in my Atkins recipe notebook

That is - if oats are ok. I felt very ill yesterday and the only thing new was oats. So I'll try them again next week. I hope I can have them...
