Did I screw it up?? 1st day on OWL

  • Did I screw it up?? 1st day on OWL

    Well.. I did it .. I'm in OWL..

    This was my day..

    Breakfast 3 eggs 2 pieces of bacon 2 oz monterey jack cheese
    lunch 2 cans of albacore tuna 1 CUP CUCUMBERS
    cream cheese here and there.. splenda here and there..

    Left to church..

    Got home at 10pm

    and my white board sums up... 8 carbs!!!!!!!!!

    No money ..

    Had what I had in my fridge..

    4 slices 0 carbs ham and mayo

    and to fill up the count to total 25...

    1 cup cucs
    1 cup cauli
    1 cup broccoli
    1 cup green beans
    1 cup spinach!!!!!!!! all with butter

    Isn't it too much veggies????????????? Finishing thew big bowl of the mix as we speak

    Question #1.... Why do I feel Guilty?
    Self-Answer ... I'm used to induction

    Question #2... Is there still a limit for sweeteners and cheese??? Today I had to over-do-them to fill up the count!! 2.5oz monterey jack 1.5 oz cream cheese and like 2 splenda portions (1carb each)..

    Had my gallon of water and everything feels good.. except for the confusion...

    Thanx for all your replies ... I hope I didn't screw it up.

    Its far too much in veggies! but who got fat from eating veggies?

    You should be just having your 3 normal cups + 5net carbs of veggies

    your cheese and splenda looks fine, or is that in addition to the allowance?

    I dont think you screwed up, you had no need to eat all those veggies! but it wont kill you.

    Its not a MUST that you should be eating 25 carbs, and you dont have to do it every day, every other day is fine, youre testing your body.

    If that was me (and this may not be perfect but it would be my best option)

    I would of gone for some of the ham and ONE cup of "other" veggies(broc/cauli), maybe one and a half.

      In first week of OWL you should only add those 5 net carbs 3-4 days a week as far as I understand it.
      I just started yesterday and I had trouble even reaching the 20 carbs, let alone 25.
      I had had my veggie allowance, so I whipped up some cream and made it 24.
      I think I've gotten so used to the 20 carbs, that my cooking and calculating needs to adjust now.

      As far as I know the limit for sweeteners stays and the cheese limit only changes when you move to rung 2 (someone correct me if I'm wrong ).

      You had a few cups too much veggies but hey, you didn't exceed the carb limit, so I think you'll be fine.
      I guess your carb, fat, protein ratio will be kinda messy though
      Date to reach goal: I don't care, as long as it happens :P

        I agree with Emma and Sera. You eat the usual 3 cups of veggies, as you did during Induction, but you add an additional 5 net carbs of the Induction veggies.

        Each vegetable has its own net carb amount. Therefore 1 cup of lettuce is not equal to 5 net carbs, nor is 1 cup of artichoke hearts.

          I know I'm so confused!! Definitely, 1 extra cup of veggies WON'T by any means make me reach the 25gr I need to be in OWL rung 1... I need like 4-5 cups to get 5 more carbs as I discovered and proved last night.. so someone said that whipped some cream to reach the 25 gr... why not reaching it with veggies??

          On the other hand.. I'm still confused with the part of adding 5gr every other day... DANDR 2002 doesn't say that .. here's the thread where I dicuss that ..

          Please ADBB veterans, help me!!! This is why I didn't want to move to OWL, but I was totally stalled (this morning I'm heavier.. BTW)

          Emma... No, the cheese and splenda I listed is all I had.. but my question is .. Is there a limit for chhese and sweeteners on OWL? thank you guys in advance for the answer.. I'ts killing me cuz if there is.. I don;t know how in the world I'll get to 25..and further

            Don't overdo the cheese to make your carb totals higher! Too much cheese often has a stalling effect. As you progress in OWL, you should actually gradually lower the amount of fat you eat, which generally means eating less cheese. I wouldn't overdo the sweeteners either. The goal is to increase your healthy carb count.

            You are correct that you need more than 3 cups of veggies to make your totals higher. That's because you are eating some of the lowest carb ones there are. How easy is it to get higher? Try adding pumpkin puree (not canned pumpkin pie filling) or tomato sauce (no sugar added) to your diet.

            It's a lot easier to get your total carb counts higher as you move through the rungs of OWL because dairy, fruits, legumes, etc are much higher than lettuce or cauliflower.

              You eat 5 net carbs more than what you were eating during your Induction. So if you were eating 15 net carbs during Induction, your Rung 1 OWL carbs will be 20 net carbs.

                Yep, higher carb veggies are the only solution to that problem but it's still weird in your case since you packed your day with veggies from the 2nd part of the induction veggies list.
                How about tomatoes though? They have more carbs and can be tasty too if they aren't the watery dutch tomatoes we get here (I grow my own this year)

                  that's every day really coz I thought I had it figured out like you should only add those veggies 3-4 days in the first week and in the second you eat them every day.
                  now if that only goes for new veggies, that would mean I could have like brussels sprouts every second day and the days in between I add 5 net carbs with broccoli or so? O.o

                  If so I didn't make my new limit today lol....waaaaaah

                      look at the stickies in this forum, its recommended you do the "new" thing every other day for the first week or so, it depends how long you want to stay on each rung...

                      You can add more cream and dairy stuffs on rung 2! almost there chica!

                        Daniela,

                        Have you read the stickies in the top of this forum? They provide waaaay more information and explanation than the OWL chapter in DANDR, in my opinion. Why don't read you read each of the stickies, and quote the parts you don't understand with a question. Some information is covered more than once in those stickies, but go ahead and read all of them in case one makes more sense to you than another one. And, like I suggested, please post on the ones you have questions about.

                        You'll get it straight, in time, I promise! Hang in there, girl.

                          I know .. but isn't this forum strictly based on DANDR?? I mean... I know you all guys are so successful.. and I wanna do as good as you're doing.. I just don't understand why the 3-4 times a week thing if the book doesn't say so.. who stablished such a rule? Just asking, I'm curious and still confused..

                            Just to help you - on page 179 of DANDR there is a point form list of The Rules of OWL all summarised by Dr A

                            the 5th point says
                            Eat a food group no more than three times per week to start. Then you may eat it daily.

                            It really is easier to see if you a 'reaction' to a certain food if you start it off rather gradually. I was finding OWL so hard to get my head around too when I first moved up, it so does get much easier to do everyday after a little while - hang in there

                              i have the hardcover book.. it's different page.. but mine says..
                              in my book I couldn't find the 3 times a week thing anywhere.. .. I have the hardcover 3rd edition and it says:
                              " Your Own Private, Personal Number (Page 147)
                              ....I refer to your daily threshold of carbohydrate consumption as your Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing (CCLL). Stay below this number and you will experience ongoing weight loss. Go above it and your weight loss stalls. Here's how you'll determine your CCLL: Each week, you'll incrementally increase the quantity of carbohydrate you eat beyond the salad and one cup serving of vegetables allowed during Induction. These increments should measure roughly five grams of daily carbohydrates, representing what I call one "level".
                              During the first week on OWL, increase your daily carb intake from the 20 grams a day on Induction to 25 grams a day -going up one level. I recommend you add either another salad, half an avocado, a cup of cauliflower or six to eight stalks of sparagus or another vegetable. COntinue to eat this way for the rest of the week. As long as your weight loss continues steadily, you can go up another level -to 30 grams daily- the following week. If you are a veggie lover, you may be happy continuing to add more salad greens and other vegetables. Or you may choose to add a half-cup of cottage cheese, an ounce od sunflower seeds or a dozen macadamia nuts. If you have been feeling fruit deprived, now is the time to add berries, the fruits lowest on the glycemic index"....

                              So I couldn't find nothing saying anything about 3 days a week.. or so.. please help! I'm confused. That's aLL IT SAYS!! So it clearly states that I should do it like that the rest of the week, and to add veggies until I got 25gr.. I looked so easy when I read the book.!! I just finished the stickies and it gets even more confusing... I will proceed as my book says to avoid further frustration.. Or i'll get back to induction as we speak!! I was planning to use ketostix as recommended in the book, to find my CCLL.. I mean.. adding 5 carbs weekly until the strip won't change, calculating the carb count in each veggie using my brand new DRAtkins New Carb Gram Counter... cuz honestly, if I don't do it this way, I'll go nuts
