  • Disney Suggestions

My parents just surpised us with a Disney vacation for next week. We will be there 4 days and nights. Any suggestions for easy foods to carry in a backpack to snack on and hold us over if we can not find legal foods? This will be our first major outing since starting this WOE and I am scared. We are on rung 1.
    Thanks

I doubt very much that you'll be able to find much in the way of legal food in a theme park, but with a bit of planning you'll be fine.

    chicken drumsticks/wings
    pepperoni/salami
    cheese
    ham
    bacon
    celery sticks w/ cream cheese

    Good luck, and have fun!

      Re: Disney Suggestions

Adena was just there at Disney last month...she and her husband both are on Atkins and they fared very well. I went over and spent an afternoon with them and was PLEASANTLY surprised with the variety of legal foods that you can find...even with eating on the meal plans that come with some of the vacations. I don't think you'll have a problem at all. The theme parks have lots of different types of restaurants and salads are in abundance.

There are grocery stores in the kissimmee/St. Cloud area, so you can buy groceries there pretty easily. Keep boiled eggs, celery sticks, cream cheese, ham, stuff like that for quick snacks. I even bought JICAMA while I was there.

That sounds great. Thanks so much. I was scared as my mom told the kids and they got excited. We won't have a meal plan, but they did purchase us character dinnings each day. I am sure we will survive, maybe even better this year than last since the weight lose. I know I feel like I have more energy now.

          Re: Disney Suggestions

Hi, Fatty. As Joy said, I was just in Disney for a week on the dining plan, which included a daily character breakfast, and we had no trouble at ALL staying on plan. The character buffets all had plenty of legal options (protein and veggies for you on induction). In the parks, you can eat hamburgers without the buns, giant turkey legs, and a lot of places serve salads, too! You'll also find a lot of chicken. The only thing you might be a little limited on is snacks. We rented a double stroller (or you can bring your own), and brought a mini-cooler with us that we kept in the stroller, where we kept string cheese, carrots, and nuts (cheese, pepperoni, and celery are great options for induction). Also, at the character meals (especially breakfasts), grab a few individual servings of cream cheese. That with a little splenda on it makes a great snack!

Disney has a surprisingly variety of legal foods and I really had no problems staying on plan. Of course, there ARE a lot of temptations there. You just have to remind yourself it's about the parks, the rides, your kids... what you eat or don't eat doesn't make it any more "fun."

Hope you have a great time!

            Re: Disney Suggestions

When we go to disney we usually go in the morning, leave to get a big lunch out and then go back to the park in the evening, that way you only have to worry about carrying small snacks with you to tide you over.

Have fun at Disney, I was just at Magic Kingdom last week.... Adena is dead on with everything she said. Remember to bring your own ponchos if it looks like rain, they charge like 7 bucks. And definitely make use of the fast pass.

I agree. Frankly, I find Disney very easy. I've been there many times - even when I was at my strictest low carbish. Most of the places have salads and some form of meat. There are a surprisingly large # of fish options.

I think you'll do great. Just remember to make a full breakfast of it. If you rush to the theme park w/o it - you might get into trouble. Eat up a bit more than you think since the walking can sometimes crash your glucose if you aren't used to it.

                        ENJOY!

Yes! Trust those of us who live here!! Here's the cycle:

                          Morning: Sunny
                          Noon: Partly cloudy
                          3:00: Cloudy
                          5:00 RAINING
                          8:00 Rain ends

                          Next day: same thing

My family just about lives at Disney; we have annual passes and go at least once or twice a month. Never a problem staying on plan. You can eat legal ANYWHERE, including Disney. Just stay focused. Bring your own water; there are water fountains to refill for FREE.

                          HAVE A MAGICAL TIME!

We are leaving tomorrow so that we will be there for my daughter's 6th birthday on Thursday. We are staying at the Port Orleans- Riverside. I think I have it worked out. We have several character dinnings reserved that I feel will be a challenge based on their menus, but there are options. I packed water bottles since I only like one type (that felt very monk-ish). I am sure it will all work out. Forgot the ponchos, but we can pick them up there when needed. Looks like rain all week so maybe we will some of the only fools there. But when a 5 year old says i dont want a party i just want to go to Disney the grandparents tend to listen.
