Today's my one-month "anniversary" here! I have lost 10.5 pounds and I can wear my "fat" jeans again (cuz I had outgrown even those before I started Atkins). So far I am really pleased with the transformations I'm seeing in my body composition. I haven't been exercising as much as I should (I take a college-level water aerobics class twice a week for two hours for my PE requirement and I've been doing some toning exercises...but nothing strenuous really).
I must confess...I've been deceiving my husband about my Atkineering. He believes in science and evidenced-based practices and he says that the preponderance of evidence is on the side of the low fat/low cal and "calories in/calories out" crowd. He is also convinced that Atkins is unsafe and unsound (generally from our acquaintances who did Atkins WRONGLY back during the low-carb craze a few years ago).
So...when I started this I didn't tell him what I was doing. Before beginning, I told him I was feeling weak and sluggish and that I was going to give up drinking alcohol (which was starting to creep up to like three or more drinks per night) and try to eat better. After I started, I told him I was doing the "meat and greens" diet: that would be meat/egg/cheese and leafy/green veggies only, until I felt better.
I'm sure he was skeptical. Anyway, he and the kids went away for a week on vacation to his parents house while I stayed here to finish some research projects for school and to take care of the pets. When he got home, he was like: "Whoa...you're melting...and you have muscles...what have you been doing?" I said (flippantly): "Meat and greens, Babe."
OK...so this weekend we made hamburgers for supper and he ate his without a bun on a bed of leafy greens...just like mine! And then yesterday, he says he went to a burrito place for lunch and ordered his without a tortilla (but he had the rice and beans). He's trying to copy my WOE! I think he's on to me though, because I scolded him for the beans and rice and he said: "What's wrong with beans and rice?" Me: "er...um...well, they're not meat/egg/cheese or leafy greens are they?" He: "And they're high in carbs, aren't they?" Me: "uh...well...probably... Just stick to the meat and greens, OK?!"
So...I know I shouldn't deceive him about my WOE, but I also feel like it's none of his business really. It's working for me, and I'm enjoying it. The fact that he is trying to copy me is proof that something good is happening to my body and that he not only notices, but is impressed by it. Eventually I will tell him, because I want him to experience these good results for himself. However, I want to make sure that I succeed first by becoming fit and healthy, because then he can't deny the benefits of this WOE, despite what the current scientific "experts" say.
So, that's my confession. Bring on the debate~
I'm looking forward to month two!
