    I do get it. From what I see you are not eating nearly enough food. When you eat far too little, as it appears you are, your body goes into starvation mode and won't allow you to lose weight.

    I plugged your food into fitday and was generous (large lamb chop, large lettuce leaves, large eggs etc.) and came up with:
    650 calories
    46% fat Your fat is way too low, it should be at 60-65%
    50% protein Your protein is way too high, it should be 30%
    4% carbs seem okay, but you should be eating more veggies

    Basically, you are eating at least 1/2 what you should be on a daily basis, and this is dangerous for your health. If you decrease your protein and increase your fat you will lose weight. There is no question about it. Accorgind to Dr. Atkins, no one should ever go below 1200 calories per day except on a rare occasion.


    Here's some information about it:
    Quite simply, your body goes into 'starvation mode'. This mechanism, which is thought to have evolved as a defence against starvation, means the body becomes super efficient at making the most of the calories it does get from food and drink. The main way it does this is to protect its fat stores and instead use lean tissue or muscle to provide it with some of the calories it needs to keep functioning. This directly leads to a loss of muscle, which in turn lowers metabolic rate so that the body needs fewer calories to keep ticking over and weight loss slows down. Of course, this is the perfect solution if you're in a famine situation. But if you're trying to lose weight, it's going to do little to help you shift those unwanted pounds.

    As a general rule though, most nutrition experts recommend never going below 1,000-1,200 calories a day if you're dieting on your own. It's also worth bearing in mind that the body doesn't suddenly 'enter' and 'leave' starvation mode, like crossing the border from Devon into Cornwall. It's a gradual process - so you don't need to panic if you do go below your calorie intake very occasionally.

      Ha! NO i'm not!

      Mines plugged into fit day too and I eat 1600 calores a day and my percentages are always 65% fat, 3% carbs, 32% protein

      The tuna is 317 calories, eggs are 155, mayo is 247 and cream is 100 which is almost 1000 alone.... I some times have half an avocado too that makes it higher.

      There are things i use like butter with eggs (depedning on how i cook them) oil for cooking my meat etc. I eat a HEAP. eggs for breaky, big tuna salad fo lunch and a big dinner.

      I'm only 54 and i don't weigh that much any more! I think i'm eating ok! hehe

      I'm definately not in starvation mode.

        You were wondering what could be going wrong for you. 2 Tblsp Mayo is 198 calories, 1 tsp cream (as you stated) is about 10 calories. I used tuna in water the first time and changed it to tuna in oil. You're still well under 1,000 calories for a day.

        If you are in pre- maintenance you should probably be eating twice that amount. What I see are more induction levels.

          on a normal day i'll have more fat that than - extra tbs of cream and mayo...

          I'm on rung one of owl. However im a little scared because i'm now not in ketosis.... on run one.

            I understand. I think you need to tweak things here and there until you get the right combination for you. Don't worry about the ketosis. Not everyone goes into ketosis. If you believe you are eating properly, drinking the proper amount of water and moving your body then you will lose weight.

            You are only 8 pounds away from your goal, according to your signature. You should be closer to the final rungs by now yet you say you're on rung 1. Move yourself up all of the rungs, slowly, and see where that leaves you.

              I couldnt be more ON TRACK with my menu than I am. BUT i'm getting fatter.



              My opinion of your situation... you have a very unhealthy perception of what weight you should be. You may have this special number of 110 lbs. in your head, but it may be too small for your body's build.

              Personally, I'm 5'3" my BMI says I should be 113lbs. I know if I ever got below 120 I'd probably look like I was dying. Maybe your body is just being stubborn because it knows better than your head does.

              The attitude your taking almost sounds like your treating Atkins like an eating disorder you can get away with having.

              BE HEALTHY.

              Don't starve yourself. Don't flip out if you are not losing weight. You are already 118 lbs. That is small on any frame. Don't hurt yourself.

                No, i'm just frustrated because i've been on atkins for over a year and I have never cheated.

                I'm a tiny person. I am not thin. My body isn't even - if i had even distribution i'd be thin. I have no legs, no bum, no fat arms... just a fat gut. its all in one spot.

                I'm use to being this weight, i'd just like to see a result for the effort and i'm also really worried that I cant even g o back to eating semi-normal pre-maintenance etc foods because my body has gotten use to eating like this.

                  If you add the owl foods slowly, and see what ones affect you..then no you wont gain all of your weight back. It's like a science experiment. I've been lucky to have had no food issues (though i'm questioning dairy) aside from portion control with nuts. but it took me quite a while to figure this out. I really believe it's not a good idea to stay with induction foods forever, your body needs the nutrients from a wide variety of foods...this is the reason you add the food groups back in owl.

                  Maybe your body is happy where it is? maybe you should take your measurements and concentrate on that and how you feel look in clothing sizes rather than concentrating on the number on the scale.

                  It's amazing how our view of ourselves can be so much more distorted than how others see us. i struggle with this all the time...I often go back and look at old pictures so i can see how far I have come...

                    How much are you excercising whwat type of excercise you might not be eating enough causing your body to go into starvation mode.

                      I was exercising 5 times a week (2 days walking 5 miles 3 days work out at gym with 45 minutes light weights training and 3miles jogging) however have been unable to exercise for the past 2 weeks due to knee injury. I have been doing sit ups at home during this period. I have cut down my food to what i stated earlier due to not exercising right now.

                        From the looks of your menu, you not only are NOT on Rung 1 of OWL, but you aren't even in induction.

                        In Induction, it's TWO CUPS of induction list veggies (salad) and ONE CUP of another veggie, like the broccolli. If you aren't eating that at a minimum, you aren't doing Atkins.

                        On Rung 1, you add another 5 grams of veggie carbs.

                        And I'm sorry, but I don't see how you could possibly be high in calories. Yesterday, I had 6 eggs, 1 cup of ground beef, 2 cups of lettuce, zuchini with parmesan cheese, 3 slices of eggplant, induction chocolate mousse, and 2 tablespoons of flax, and I just BARELY hit 1600.

                        You need to be eating more, eating more frequently, eating more veggies, and taking it easy on your body.

                          ok. So this is what my fit day looks like.

                          As you can all see... I eat HEAPS and ABOVE the calories most of you eat.

                          This IS owl 1 because i'm eating a lot more brocolli than a cup - around 5carbs more.

                          The last 3 days are in but there was a bit of a gap when i went away and wasn't filling it in, just keeping it in check on paper. Check out my last 3 days and let me know what you think.

                            Thank you for posting that. Here's what else I see in your fitday journal:

                            7/11/07 703 calories 9 carbs
                            7/14/07 981 calories 9 carb
                            7/20/07 453 calories 11 carb
                            and numerous other days well under 1,000 calories and under 20 carbs

                            Several people other than myself have tried to help you to see the big picture. You have been eating this way for over a year now. Following the Atkins program, you should no longer be at rung one. I am concerned for your health and only want the best for you.

                              ok - as i just said: please look at the past 3 days.

                              Guys - i eat the same stuff most days and i dont always completely fill in my fit day.

                              Most of those other days are as you will notice in the foods - my STANDARD diet - up to and including lunch.

                              I fill it in at work, not after dinner and i dont always go back and do it.

                              Please stop addressing me like I have no understanding of how this all works.

                              The last 3 days are a reflection of my diet - they are what i ate the past 3 days - which is identical to what I generally eat. I have a set grocery list i eat from and I have 3 varying 'night time meals' that are all within the confines of the diet.

                              Please address the 3 days which are actually a reflection of the diet. If i'm doing something wrong there, then let me know!!!! Because i'm stumped!

                                i'd also like to qualify that by saying that unlike most people here, i have not only NEVER eaten under 10 carbs in a day, but i regularly found it difficult in induction to stay under 20.
