  • You really can get used to anything!

Ok, so I can tolerate diet beverages. To me they taste better than water at any rate, but I have had a terrible time sweetening my coffee on Atkins. I have been just forcing myself to drink it black or with heavy cream because Splenda in it tasted like hot bleach to me.

Well, 6 weeks in, and boy howdy have my tastes changed!

I am at work, and though I had a good lunch, felt desperate for something sweet. I have cut out Crystal Light because of the dizzy headaches, so I figured coffee with cream was the best I could do. Well, today I added a splenda (again, in desperation) and amazingly, no more poison taste! My tastebuds have adapted to the whole non-sugar environment and Splenda in coffee is no longer an abomination. Gotta count the carbs, but what a difference.

So glad you waited it out and allowed the time to become comfortable with your new WOE. I've completely changed my likes/dislikes in the past few years. I never thought I could live without my favorite foods, but thanks to trying new things and adapting to new tastes, I am completely happy with my choices.

Thanks for posting this....just shows that if you keep a positive attitude about the changes you make...it becomes a healthy habit!

Thank you, Becky. That was nice to hear.

Coffee is a comfort for me, and having it black just wasn't comfortable. Splenda tastes better and better to me now, so I gave it another go, and amazingly it had appeared to lose that awful bitter aftertaste (that seemed to only show up in coffee).

Your transformation is amazing. Well done, and kudos to you. Do you have any favorite Atkins type recipes that you've had success with? I am trying to find a good way to make donuts, but most of the products listed in the recipe section list bake mixes that are no longer sold.

Sometime I find if I only us 1/2 a packet of Splenda it tastes more like real sugar.

I'm not a sweets person, but I think this applies to all the foods that you give a good go at learning to like. I've discovered, though, that after almost two years, I now like things I forced myself to eat at the beginning enough that I am in danger of over eating them now or craving them, just like I did carbs. I wasn't much of a meat eater at all, and now I'm having to make myself cut back on portions. I didn't like fat, grease, butter or mayo and now I can slather it on. Yum! I thought pork rinds were gross; now I have to ration out small portions and put the bag in the freezer, out of sight.

I did find that I had to wait a while between the real thing and the substitute for my taste buds to 'forget' what the real thing tastes like. Then, after a while, the substitute tasted better and better. I was a huge bread eater and tried flax bread as soon as it was legal; thought it tasted awful. I waited for another few months and was really wanting something bread-like and tried it again--not bad. Now I like it too much. I want to eat the whole thing in one sitting.

This whole low carb lifestyle is an ongoing learning experience, but I'm enjoying it immensely. I'm not out of the woods yet, and I guess I'll always have to watch for old tendencies to surface again.

          Sunny!

So far so good. Splenda coffee tastes better and better. I had a glass of dry fume blanc the other night that seemed so sweet as to be almost cloying.

As long as I know that I am still losing, I don't think that I will have trouble on this WOE indefinitely. I have been bouncing between 148 and 149 all week, so I'd like to see the scale drop a pound before I feel confident again. I have added more veggies and such this week, but honestly I think it's just that I have had too many calories and not enough exercise.
