  • Question about grains rung

Those of you who have made it this far, when you introduced your first piece of bread did you get a tummy ache? I started rung 9 3 days ago and did it with some SF whole grain wheat. 1 slice. It made my tummy hurt SO bad. Is it from just not having it in so long? Today I was supposed to have another peice but I didn't do it yet because I'm scared it might cause the same tummy ache. I had initially planned to do 1 slice 3 days a week to gauge any ill effects (I lost 3 lbs since introducing the bread that one time it broke a month long stall). Would you consider it a bad food for myself due to the tummy problem or should I try it again before giving it up for good?

I'd definitely try it again. It might not have been the bread that caused it, but an unfortunate coincidence. Maybe have half the amount you had last time though... you can always increase. Fingers crossed for the second attempt.

Ok thanks girls, I'll do it again today since it's a holiday. At least if it hurts me I won't have to go to work!

That's what happened to me, so I know I'm off bread and grain forever. I tried the new white 100% whole wheat by Sara Lee. The first piece made my tummy ache and I bloated up something terrible. I waited a few days and ate another, same thing. I waited several more days, ate only half a slice. All of a sudden, I had stomach cramps so bad I was bent double and pouring sweat. I almost never throw up, but I was in the bathroom forever until I was dry heaving. My weight shot up 12 pounds from those 2 1/2 slices of bread. It was gone again in 6 days. No more for this chickie!

Try it one more time to rule out any cause of the stomach ache from something other than the bread. If you still get the ache, drop the bread from your menu. You might want to try other wheat products to make sure the culprit isn't wheat---because unless you are eating boiled wheat berries, commercially produced breads have additives. IF you are still having this problem with other wheat products, then the wheat might be a culprit.

HOWEVER, that doesn't necessarily mean you should give up on the grains rung. Remember that corn, barley oats, rice, buckwheat, etc. are all grains and you can give these grains a try.

Wheat causes my asthma to flare up, but I have no problems with corn, oats, rice, barley and other grains.

Disco, my wife also has trouble sometimes with breads. Bread expands with liquid and that could be the problem. I personally have used the Natures Own SF 100% Whole Wheat Bread and have had no problems with it, but I know Diana sometimes has. Hers though has to do with a hiatel hernia and it expands in her esophagus when followed by liquid and causes it to back up. It may do the same thing in the stomach and cause stomach pain.
