  • Rung One - What did you add?

I have decided to move onto OWL - rung one. This is a first for me! I reached goal on Atkins three years ago by staying on induction for four months. I never quite found my CCLL and never learned how to move into maintenance. Not at all! This time will be different!

Tell me: What did you add on Rung One?

    149.8/no weigh/ 119

    1st goal: 139 (earlier weight)
what the rungs mean to me:
    rung 1 - more veggies
rung 2 - dairy (some milk in coffee)
rung 3 - seeds, nuts (mostly sprinkled on salads)
    rung 4 - berries, melon
    rung 5 - wine -
    rung 6 - beans, hummus
    rung 7 - other fruits
rung 8 - carrots/ potatoes (nah, prolly not)
rung 9 - whole grains (fresh Dutch breads...)
    Major Goal - 128 lbs/ healthy range
    (on to pre-maintenance)

Re: Rung One - What did you add?

Rung One is 5 net carbs of any veggie listed on the Induction Acceptable Foods list. So I the Induction veggies I added were mainly from the "other vegetable" list because they were higher in carbs than the "Salad" list and so, I wouldn't get stuck eating 15 cups of something just to get the 5 net carbs in. I also started OWL in the fall, so the "other list" veggies made great creamy soups!

One of my favorite rung 1 meals was spaghetti squash with tomato sauce. I would also add mozzarella and pepperoni--it was like a cross between pizza and "pasta"!

            Let's see......

            cherry tomatoes.

            Pumpkin

            cauliflower with cheddar cheese.

            jicama "fried apples"

I never did OWL either,Shannon. Now I'm on the dairy rung. It's GOOD. It's actually HARD to add foods in, because you're so used to the limits. It took me at least 3 weeks to start consistently remembering to add additional veggies.

Re: Rung One - What did you add?

I am on rung 1 too and am having trouble keeping to list of adds. Today I ate flaxseed and soy tortilla chips (better than they sound) and I know that it's not time for them yet but I just keep thinking increase carbs not the source of the carbs. Better re-read that part in dandr.

                pumpkin and zucchini and cabbage

Fried zucchini is my fav w/breakfast in the morning.
Baked shredded cabbage and cooked ground beef is what I made for this next week's lunch...I'll top it with cheese later.
Pumpkin I mix with splenda, vanilla, and cinnamon and then put in tiny containers to take with me to for lunch to heat up in the microwave...very easy and yummy.

Soy tortilla's? Sounds great, do you buy them that way or make them? Sounds really, really good!

I love spaghetti squash, too. Yummy ideas.

Pumpkin? I have never had it! Do you muy a pumpkin or out of a can?

                    Thanks!

Re: Rung One - What did you add?

I buy a large can of pumpkin every week. I blend it with 4 eggs, some splenda, and some pumpkin pie spice (to taste) and then add a quarter cup of heavy cream. Put it in a greased casserole and bake it - it's like a crustless pumpking pie.

After it has cooled, I put it in small tupperware containers and refrigerate, so I can just grab one and pop it into my lunch cooler in the morning.

Don't get too excited about the soy tortillas... as apple indicated, they are not legal until Rung 6.

About pumpkin - I get the canned Libby's Pumpkin. It is near the baking stuff in my grocery stores. Make sure to pick up the 100% Pure Pumpkin and not the Pumpkin Pie Filling... the cans look almost identical and are located right next to each other on the shelf.

Mitz- your'e right about the chips, they are soy flaxseed tortilla chips. They also have corn meal in them. I buy them from trader joe's. They are very good. They have 4 grams of fiber and 6 grams of protein per 1 oz serving. They would be appropriate later like mitzi said. I really had a taste for them yesterday so I got some. I also got this really good chive and cilantro yogurt dip only 1 carb per 2 tbls. and some hansen's soda, it's made with splenda. That store is great.

                              Pecan Pie

Low carb luxury has a pecan pie sub recipe somewhere on the site... of course it's not rung 1 appropriate if I remember correctly but I do remember searching out my fave foods when I started to be sure that I wasn't going to be missing out on these things without a fair substitute. The one they made there looked pretty tasty.
