I was wondering if anyone saw the weight loss stories on Oprah yesterday. It was amazing how much weight some of these people lost.. One guy caught my attention named (David) lost nearly 400lbs. The only thing that was said was that he lost it by switching between high and low-carb days to avoid plateaus. Has anyone heard of this? I would love to talk to him (I have emailed the Oprah show) to see how he really does that.. What do you people think about that?

Re: Oprah show on weight loss
Yes i have heard of this to an extent
Look up "slimming world"
its a UK diet, held like a weightwatchers meeting
Veggies are unlimited
one day you would eat as much protein as you want
the other day as much rice/potato/pasta as you want
you can either alternate days or do two days on each, or even stick to one day forever
I lost 30lbs in uh, about 6 months, but it is not a WOE you can stick to for life, ive known so many do it and so many are back where they started.HW 303Aug '04 SW-287 LW-232Restart - Apr 07 - SW 266 CW 225

Re: Oprah show on weight loss
That's interesting - my brother in law just started something which sounds low carb, but they give them two weeks 'off' for Christmas - which I said was crazy because you'd get all your cravings back and doesn't address underlying causes, etc. (not that I can talk today).
Emma - just out of interest, why id you find it hard to stick with?

Re: Oprah show on weight loss
Yesterday I sat down to watch it and don't you know the power went off. I was in the dark and no tv. So....missed the show.
I listen to Bob Greene on the radio and he always talks about going from low-fat to low-carb on special occassions. I like his exercise tips, thats why I listen to him....I just ignore all the low-fat crap cause I know it doesn't work for me. I've heard him mention Oprah having great success on modified low carb.
As we all know tho, if you don't eliminate the cravings and keep teasing your mind with excessive carbs all the time, you'll become a yo-yo. Its so much easier to find the life-style that is comfortable and pleasing and stick to it.Starting Date 3/12/04 285/165/145 - F

the carbs and meats on their particular days were unlimited - breads however were not included in those counts (white or wheat) and had to be used as "sins"
You got 10 sins a day, but you could save them up for the whole week if you wanted, i used to save mine for alcohol on a weekend, which didnt even equate to half a night out for me, which meant literally nothing other than the allowed foods on those days, which isnt as great as it sounds....
I could prolly do this NOW, i'm more disciplined that i was back then, i was just a kid...
At the end of the day you can lose weight on any controlled diet if you have the will power ( i am not wanting this to leap in to a debate!) you just have to find which one works for you and well, this one works better for me.HW 303Aug '04 SW-287 LW-232Restart - Apr 07 - SW 266 CW 225

Re: Oprah show on weight loss
Is that healthy?
Well, I guess it can't be too bad...I mean we were gatherer/hunters at one point, so we didn't really know what was coming next. Very interesting.

Re: Oprah show on weight loss
I think it all boils down to the basic diet idea that if you burn more calories then you eat your going to lose weight period. The issue is will power and feeling satisfied. I know so many people who have lost weight and kept it off on weight watchers, slim fast, you name it........ it works, if it works for you. I think most of us have ended up here because none of those types of restrictions worked for us and what we really needed was something that would carry us through in real life and not just be a fad diet. The Atkins WOL addresses almost every area that is a downfall to most other mainstream diets. It's satisfying, you can eat when your hungry there fore you are not hungry. You have gotten rid of cravings for foods that are not good for you. You have learned to eat healthier veggies and tried things you might not have ever tried before. If you have a sweet tooth there are fabulous recipies that settle those cravings as well...... you can travel almost anywhere anytme and find something you can safely eat and amintain your WOE. It just plain works!
I have pretty much stopped listening to and reading about other ways of dieting that might even entice me to think about them because I am so satisfied with this WOL that I don't feel the need to search for another way which I am so Thankful for. While I think it's good to be open it's also very important to not sabatoge yourself. And for me any thoughts outside of what I am deciding is my WOL does that to me.
I'm sticking tried and true to this WOL and I know with out a doubt that I will reach my goal and be successful at keeping it off ......... What more could a girl ask for??????

Re: Oprah show on weight loss
I agree with you Heidi. It is what each of us can do and stick to. I also know lots of people who use other methods of weight loss and are quite successful....but Atkins is the one weight loss program that satisfies me, my likes and I can do without feeling deprived or miserable. It is also the only one that I've found that has such a great support system with knowledgable people who are always available with encouragement.Starting Date 3/12/04 285/165/145 - F

Re: Oprah show on weight loss
I was just going to mention this as well Becky, different things work for different people. I never knock someone elses woe if it is working for them, I have a friend right now who's at her goal weight and maintaining a 35lb weigh loss on the WW program. I've tried it twice and couldn't stick to it, she tried Atkins and couldn't. to each his own. In the end if you are eating a healthy, well balanced 'white-free' diet, and you are able to stick with it, than that's what matters.Originally posted by dreamof145I agree with you Heidi.
