• Cream Cheese & Sugar

I was looking in the local store today for cream cheese. I was looking of course away from the "lite" stuff since they tend add more sugar/carbs into that. All brands I found contain *at least* 2gm of sugar..

Here is an example of a brand called "Lucerne" which is lowest sugar & carb I was able to find... Serving Size (2 tbsp)

Total Fat 10g (15% DV)
Chelesterol 30mg (10% DV)
Sodium 105mg (4% DV)
Total Carb 2g (1% DV)
Dietary Fiber 0g (0% DV)
Sugar 2g
Protein 2g

For the red highlighted items, aren't these little high to be induction or OWL rung1 friendly? How come cream cheese is listed as OK for induction? Are there other brands with less carbs and sugar?

USDA web site though shows the following (per 2tbsp),
Carbohydrate, by difference --> 0.77g
Fiber, total dietary --> 0.0g
Sugars, total --> 0.06g

i would think this sugar is milksugar...lactose.
how often did i look at things with fruit in them and saw sugar x gram and then had to look at the ingredients to be sure it isnt real sugar but fruitsugar...fructose.
unless the word sugar is listed in the ingredients, this isnt real sugar.

Philedelphia puts out a cream cheese they call "Neufchatel" (I plead the 5th on the spelling) Tastes just like cream cheese to me, but the label says it has less than 1 gm carbs per serving.

Oh...it comes in the same rectangular packages and is usually located right by the cream cheese.

Checked the original Philadelphia creams cheese in the same store and carry the same ingredients. Just came back though from another store and found "Philadelphia 1/3 less fat", it states "<1g sugar and <1g carbs" .. So, I guess this will still count as "1g sugar and 1g carbs"! Well, better than the original Philadelphia and better than Lucerne.. but still way higher in sugar than the USDA chart.

Sara, as for the ingredients, there yo go..

Pasteurized nonfat mil and milkfat, cheese culture, salt, stabilizers (xanthan and/or carob bean and/or guar gums)

Don't ask me what these last few words mean.. hehe.. have no clue!!

But worth checking that "Neufchatel", cannot remember seeing it today, but will check again.. Thanks for the tip!

Philadelphia Brand cream cheese has the least number of carbs as compared to the store brands.

Like Sera said, it's natural milk sugar, not added sugar. You need to limit it if you're in induction, but otherwise, it's a great low-carb addition to your diet. Philadelphia Cream Cheese is the lowest in carbs and tastes great!

Re: Cream Cheese & Sugar

found this interesting as i know neufchatel to be an actually type of cheese and not a cream cheese. Looked it up on wikipedia and apparently your seeing an Americanized of actual neufchatel.

American Neufchâtel is a lower-fat cream cheese product marketed as a healthier alternative to cream cheese. It is not identical to French Neufchâtel. American Neufchâtel is somewhat softer than cream cheese due to its 33% lower fat and higher moisture content.[3]

You should keep in mind that it's lower fat than cream cheese....

I am constantly monitoring my intake through Fitday, trying to keep the % as close to 65% fat, 5% carbs and 30% protien as possible.

My fat intake is never less than 64% and maximum I have reached a day so far is %68 .. Usually it is %65-%67. Amazing how our body works, sometime you need to increase fat to boost your weight loss! Amazing, isn't it?

Re: Cream Cheese & Sugar

Over here in UK I buy an 'own brand' cream cheese from Waitrose which has only 2 grams of carbs per 100 gram of cheese (3.5 ounces), so it might be worth checking out other brands of cream cheeses than philly!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
