  • Question about Rung 2

Do I add 5 more dairy carbs to the 2-3 oz of cheese that I already eat? Or is it five dairy carbs total, including the 2-3 oz of cheese that I eat, giving me only an extra 2-3 dairy carbs a day? Thanks so much!

It's extra - you can eat more. Plus now you can eat yogurt and other stuff also.

The cheese you can have should still be limited to the 3oz, don't add 5g's more of cheddar etc, but as Kate says you can now add things like yogurt, Ricotta, Mascarpone, milk (up to 5'g's worth), cottage cheese etc.

Yay, thank you! I'm really, really looking forward to cottage cheese tomorrow, but I didn't want to spend all my dairy carbs on it because I still like colby cheese in my salad and eggs.

          Re: Question about Rung 2

Just a caution about the "fatty" OWL rungs like the dairy and nuts rungs. Fats are a high energy food. Fats have 9 calories per gram. Protein and carbs have 4 calories per gram.

During OWL our carbs increase slightly and our fats decrease slightly. Protein remains the same. By the time we reach Maintenance phase, we get about 40-50% of our daily calories from fats, 30% from proteins and the remaining 20-30% from carbs. During Induction it was about 65% fats, 30% protein and 5% carbs. So it becomes a balancing act to get the "right" amount of fats and carbs during OWL.

So if you want to eat your dairy rung foods and the 3-4 ounces of Induction cheeses daily, then you'll need to cut back on your added fats (mayo, butter, salad dressing, etc.) by a tablespoon or two in order to make sure your fat % isn't in the 70-80%.

Thanks not2late! I can easily cut out a tablespoon of butter by using cooking spray for my eggs instead, which is what I actually used before trying to add more fat to my diet pre-Atkins. I'll have enter my planned menu for tomorrow in FitDay and see if I need to adjust my fat content, just to be on the safe side.
