Re: This thing you call jicama...

Rozi, I can't believe you can't find it in South Florida! They should be EVERYWHERE.

Look at Ethnic markets or grocery stores. Particularly Mexican vs Cuban or Puerto Rican. Look at the produce markets. Publix usually carries them too. Fresh Market, Wild Oats, and Whole foods will also carry them, but they'll be EXPENSIVE there. Your best bet is to look at the ethnic grocery stores and produce/farmers markets.

It's wierd how hard it can be to find jicama. My Safeway has it all the time and it's really cheap. I bought two yesterday for less than $1.00 total. It is so good!

Bettress - I noticed you lived in Texas.. did you ever find the jimaca?? If so where? I've looked at Walmart and HEB.. but didn't see anything by that name.... Also question for everyone - where would it be: with veggies or fruit and finally what does the darn thing look like ? ~~ I am really interest in trying it with so many of your saying how good it was!

        Thanks!

Yes found it at Albertson's, but had to ask, couldn't spot it myself! lol
They had over by the yams I think. I know I recall seeing it at Tom Thumb too. Not sure what part of Texas you're in, I'm in the DFW area.

Re: This thing you call jicama...

Ok....this post has left me wanting to try this stuff. I never even heard of it before I saw it mentioned on the board here. I'm not really all that brave about trying new food. I have my favorite things that I could eat everyday and never grow weary of them. I could live on chicken breasts and broccoli. But, I think I'll give this stuff a try. I'm in the DFW area also, Bette. (Grand Prairie) I'll check the Albertson's down the street for it tomorrow.

I think it's definitely worth a try. It does have a hint of sweet, but only a hint. I think jicama differs slightly from region to region, but ours are barely sweet. I don't see me eating it by itself raw, but I did make a "hamburger Hash" with it lastnight and it was great. Since it does hold up so well to cooking it will give anything crunch. And in a savory dish it will taste sweeter.

I saw a jicama bread recipe (I think it was on this board, if not I'll post it)
that sounds fantastic. And I think it's popular to make cinammon apple dessert out of them.

Having another lettuce/spinach/leafy/greeny veg alternative is a big bonus too.

Re: This thing you call jicama...

For an easy snack I slice it, spread a little cream cheese on it and put a slice of smoked salmon on it. It has the crunch that reminds me of a cracker but it's juicy and kind of sweet which goes great with the smoked salmon.

Re: This thing you call jicama...

I got my first one last week and I really like it. To me, it is best cold and raw. My daughter likes it too. Perhaps the reason it tastes sweet to me is I have stopped using any type of sweeteners or eating anything that has artificial sweetener in it. (No gum, diet rite, etc) and I only drink water now or an occasional unsweet hot tea. So maybe that has to do with some of the sweetness.

Porcelain, you're probably right. However, as many jicama as I've eaten in the past two years....some are sweeter than others. It seems to come with moisture too. The more hydrated the root, the sweeter it tastes to me.

Yet, because of my non-use of sweetners, even ONIONS are like candy to me these days. Everything tastes sweet, even protein. If I actually ate something with real sugar, I probably couldn't stand it.

I love jicama!! I prefer to eat it raw but I have cut some up, added cinnamon and microwaved it for about 20 seconds. Tasted kinda like a baked apple - so very very good
