  • spaghetti sauce???

i have not been eating enough vegetables. period. i am now on the dairy rung and all i have eaten today is steak. for dinner, i am going to make eggplant parmesan (with no breading of course.) the lowest sugar spaghetti sauce i could find was casa visco and it has 3 grams of sugar per 1/2 cup. not bad. definitely the lowest i have found yet. sooo is this allowed? i imagine that the sugar is naturally from the tomatoes. i don't seem to stall easily and i don't anticipate a problem, but wanted to ask you all your opinions

    Re: spaghetti sauce???

I would suggest buying a can of crushed tomatoes, then adding certain spices (garlic, oregano, etc..). Personally I try to avoid anything that has sugar listed as an ingredient, by using the tomatos, it generally has less carbs and more fiber.

    Good Luck.

I use plain tomato sauce and spice it myself, I just check the ingredients to ensure there is no added sugar...you are right there will be naturally occuring sugars because of the tomatoes.

here (in Canada) the Walmart Great Value (generic) brand of tomato sauce has no added sugars, not sure if it will be the same there?

you could also buy some ROMA tomatoes and stew them yourself and add things and simmer as needed. Roma tomatoes make GREAT spaghetti sauce. If you need it sweetened use splenda but don't get sugar. Trust me I found out this weekend that even a little sugar can kick ya right out of ketosis.

All tomato sauce will have sugars listed in the nutrition panel. So will any stewed tomatoes or anything like that, because all tomatoes have natural sugars in them. What you need to look for is one where there is no sugar listed in the ingredients. I find that most STORE brands as opposed to the national brands do not have added sugar in the ingredients list. I would have to say that at 3 grams per 1/2 cup, that one probably doesn't have any added sugar, but look on the label to make sure. As long as sugar or corn syrup isn't in the ingredients list, you can use it.
