  • How much does OWL really slow weight loss?

I admit it, I've been in Induction for almost 5 months. I was planning to stay in Induction until I was about 30 pounds from my goal (70 pounds from now), but have been lurking on and off here for a while, and am thinking I should move on. The food options in the rungs are very enticing!

Currently, I lose about 1-3 pounds/week keeping a strict Induction menu and moderate exercise maybe 5-6 days/week.

How much will this slow down moving onto OWL?

    Thanks!
    Lynn

It depends on your degree of metabolic resistance, what your CCLL is, how close you eat to your CCLL, how much you exercise, etc.

I lose slow (inches faster than pounds), but I also eat close to my CCLL. It's a decision I've made for a number of reasons like I want to reduce my risk for developing saggy skin syndrome (I'm too chicken to get the excess cut off by a surgeon) and I want to avoid the health risks associated with rapid weight loss (more than 1-2 pound per week) like osteoporosis and gall bladder stones.

I stayed on Induction for 3 months and then moved to Owl. Summer coming and being able to eat berries and melons was just too much for me to pass up. I didn't notice any slow down at all. Only the last few pounds have been slow to come off, but I'm still averaging about 1 lb per week. I'm searching for my CCL now and moving up and down the rungs trying to find that perfect balance.

Give Owl a try, you won't regret it and the possibilities are endless.

I've been on OWL once I finished my two week induction and have averaged just under a lb a week. I'd recommend giving it a go, the first rung is just more veges and with the nuts & seeds rung it really does add more variety with cooking and snacks.

the diffenece betweeb OWl and Induction is 80 cals of usable energy food so there is nothing to be afraid of. Try it and see what happens. many folk forget to compare how they were losing the week or 2 before they moved when they say how much OWL slowed them down.
many folk forget that as you get smaller your body needs less cals to do the exact same stuff so your rate of lose will slow no matter what phase you are in.

I have my extra veggies today (lettuce, mushrooms, and cucumber).

Like I did when I first began Induction, I'm going to start up my Food Diary Spreadsheet to keep track of what I'm eating.

            Thanks for the answers! ha

I have only noticed one short period of slow weight loss but that is individual I think ...my weight loss has NEVER been as rapid as others ...it has remained 6-7lbs a month and I am happy with that...I had one fit about a week of no loss but other than that I see something every other week when I weigh...
confession ..I ate a bunch of Xmas cookies one day... other than that I have been on plan ..hope this helps!

good for you, any cravings? that is what you are watching for in the beginning then after several craving free days yo are looking to see if your body can handle the extra carbs. This is when you need to use your stix if you got them if not use the physical symptoms.

After 2 weeks of Induction, I'm planning to move on to OWL. For some reason, I'm not seeing the benefit of staying with just one food group for an entire week when one food within that group might be a problem and then you need to determine which one that is. I'm thinking of maybe selecting one specific food from 3 groups and eating those for a week while staying at 25 carbs or less. For instance, cream cheese from dairy, strawberries from the berry group, and kidney beans from legumes. Is there a drawback to doing OWL this way? If I stopped losing and/or gained, couldn't I safely rule out cream cheese as the cause since I had it on Induction and assume the strawberries or kidney beans were a problem food for me?

Just trying to figure out which direction to go before I start OWL. The thought of eating larger quantities of the same Induction veggies sickens me so Rung 1 is out as a starting point for OWL. Any suggestions?

I am no expert but dont think that would be a sensible way to start OWL.

How about using some of the more carb-rich allowed veggies that you might not have had much on induction instead.

You could always cook something like roasted peppers and puree them for a tasty sauce or make a soup so it doesnt feel so much like more of the same old veggies.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

                      Hi Elizellen,
Actually, what you suggested is what I've been doing the past 2 weeks. I added some cream and roasted pablano peppers to the pan drippings from a roast, then cooked it down a little. It was really good and I also used some homemade chicken broth as a soup base. That's how I've managed to make it through the 2 weeks.

It's not that I totally hate vegetables. I just find it extremely difficult to eat anything I didn't grow in my own garden and gardening seasoning, unfortunately, is several months away.

I've been re-reading DANDR this evening and since I've got so much weight to lose, I think I need to either stay on Induction or do OWL, rung 1 and stay there for as long as I possibly can.

When I started the first rung of OWL (more veggies), I promptly lost 10 lbs. in a month! That is a huge loss for me (I can sometimes go months without losing pounds). Now that I am closer to goal, the pounds seem to be coming off all so slooooooow. The benefits of eating a bigger variety food is I never get bored, and I enjoy trying new things. Don't be afraid of OWL, it is like an ongoing experiment, an enjoyable one at that.

Great photos, Floydgirl. You look fantastic! That's enough inspiration to make me want to eat those "dreadful" store bought veggies.

Ok, I'm starting on OWL today. If I can stay on rung 1 for the next 6 weeks or so, then I'll have "good" and yummy veggies like fresh broccoli, cauliflower, kohlrabi, Italian salad greens, and snow peas from my own garden to enjoy and this won't be such a challenge then.

I'm also setting a mini goal for myself as of today......to get below 200 lbs. as quickly as possible. (Waiting to exhale) Psychologically, I don't think I'm going to be able to fully convince myself Atkin's can and will work for me unless/until I see the 190's.
