  • Calories, fat, owl rungs??

    Hi there,
I was wondering should I only concentrate on my carb counting.
Should I not worry about how many calories I consume? Should I worry about the amount of fat I consume? Like what would you say a limit on olive oil per day should be? I seem to be using alot and that adds alot of calories.
Also, what is the minimum amount of time you can stay on each rung. If you are losing can you move up a rung every week???
    Thanks alot.

I can't answer all the questions but a good ratio is 65% fat, 30% protien, and 5% carbs. I think average length on a rung is about a month, some people go two weeks, some go longer. I plan on staying on rung 1 for quite a while until I try out all the veggies I can and see what I can handle. I think one rung a week is too fast. How will you figure out how a new food affected you before moving on to another? I know you are a lot closer to goal than me so I don't really know about that one.

I doubt you could have too much olive oil unless you were drinking it for a snack. I like my fat to be closer to 70% a day and protein 25%.

You shouldn't worry about getting too many calories as your body will start to get used to the food and you will get full feeling and won't want to eat any more. I personally feel you should have at least 1200 a day.

I would definitely use Fitday (www.fitday.com) and that will help you tremendously.

In the book, Dr. Atkins said not to worry about counting calories; however, I've noticed there are certainly members here who do. On the flip side, there are also members who swear that if they get too few calories, they stop losing. So I would say that as long as you continue to lose, I wouldn't worry about the calories.

You could potentially move up one rung a week, but it's not advisable, as we are to stay on each rung while we add in new foods, then move on with our tested foods. However, you may stay on certain rungs for very short times or skip them altogether. I stayed on the dairy rung for one week because the only thing I had any interest in adding was Greek yogurt, so I tried that out and moved on.

As Porcelian said, the Induction Phase "ratio" is 65% fat calories, 30% protein calories, 5% carb calories per day. When you move to OWL, you increase your total carb intake by 5 net carb grams, so that carb calorie percentage will increase slightly, and the fat calorie percentage will decrease slightly. By slightly, I mean about 1 or 2%.

        Ditto to what phillia wrote.

          Dear Porcelain,
I have been using fitday for about 4 days. I love fit day. It is so much easier. My ratio every day is very similar to that.
I just focused on the carbs. My calories are around 1700-1800. It may sound like a lot considering how small I am but like I said before starting Atkins I was eating about 2500 or so and I could never gain weight. I am very satisfied and definately not starving doing Atkins eating about 1700-1800 calories. Do you think that sounds okay?
          To Holly,
Yeah I think your right. I would probably go into starvation mode if I ate too less and slow down my metabolism.
I think I am going to concentrate keep my carbs on track and eating enough like 3 meals plus 2 snacks to keep my metabolism going.
          To Megs,
Thank you also for your imput!
          You have all helped.

          To Porcelain,
Yeah, I will definately take your advice about staying in the rungs to explore all the foods. I am going to have to do all the rungs again when I move to Canada as there are so many more options there.
          Goodluck to you all!
