This is a bit premature, but I'm planning a road trip for May and I will basically be in a car for approximately 30 hours - not non-stop but I want something I can eat between each 6 hour stop. I'll be driving solo and not only will I be snacky, but munching keeps me awake on a long haul.... bad reason to eat, but at least I acknowledge this ahead of time and am trying to make some good choices in what I eat on the road.

I already thought of things like beef jerky and pork rinds... but there has to be other stuff I can eat! I'm trying to obtain a cheap cooler so I can bring some perishable stuff like veggies, but can you guys think of anything else (besides the veggies, pork rinds and beef jerky, that is)?

    Thanks in advance.

Well actually, you don't need much of a cooler, I am sure you will pass grocery stores along the way. Do take a cooler and do take veggies but if you get tired of them, you can stop at a grocery store.

Take cheese sticks, they are good with the beef jerky.

Put boiled eggs in your cooler. Some grocery stores even sell boiled eggs...and salads you can make there.

Tuna that is sold in a bag and easy to open. Get some mayo in individual packets. Chop up one of your eggs in your tuna and eat with pork rinds.

I like to make hot wings and eat them later, they don't have to be heated up for me. Be careful what hotwings you buy because some of them can have a flour coating.

I don't know what rung you are on but macadamia nuts are good and they are (I believe) 90% fat and 10% protein. I would check that if I were you.

You can also fry up some parmesan encrusted chicken strips. You could put them in the cooler. I like stuff like that cold.

Salmon slices or ham slices wrapped around cream cheese. Make sure you don't go over the 3 to 4 ounces of cheese allowance.

Homemade guacamole to eat with the pork rinds.

A lot of these things have sodium in them so do not be discouraged if you see a pause on the scale or a weight gain due to fluid. Drink tons of water and stay away from sodas and you will do much better. The water will make you have to pee but if you drink soda, especially with caffiene, you will pee more and not be as hydrated.

Those are all good suggestions. You won't be getting a lot o exercise so you shouldn't be as hungry. Take a lot o cold drinks, or hot which ever you prefer

those are great ideas!! even for non-road trip eating. yummy.

i doubt i'll be very hungry... i'll just want to snack to keep awake. that sounds horrible, but i'd rather do it on the free-est food possible. and i want to avoid stopping for groceries so i need to look into that cooler.

        AHH. thanks so much.

Right before my last trip I finally tried the jicama I had heard so much about here. IT'S GREAT! Slice some really thin & put in a baggie, great snack, it's moist & crispy.

Nuts are good for me, I like salty stuff, have your tried the microwave cheese crisps? They keep well & I like them with the tuna packets.

A cooler is a must for anyone that has to be away from home for any length of time. I make up ham or turkey rolls and freeze them in a zip lock bag, put them in the cooler right before you leave and they will thaw and you can eat them as finger food with your string cheese. I don't eat much processed stuff, but I keep a couple of cans of potted meat along with a bag of pork rinds in my car at all times for emergencies. A can of potted meat dipped up with pork rinds has saved me more than once.

              Hello,
Sardines, Not many people care for them, but I do. I take them on hikes with me. They're a great protein food when hiking or out on the road. I also take avacodos with me. All you need is a knife and spoon. They come with the're own bowl (skin) Also celery and cream cheese is one of my favs.
              Enjoy your trip!
