  • Menu Review

Good morning! Can someone please review my menu to see if I am doing rung 1 of OWL correctly?

    BREAKFAST:

Two large eggs fried in 2 pats of butter
One fresh ground pork sausage patty
2 cups coffee with 1/2 cup Heavy cream (total)
    2 packets of Splenda

    LUNCH:

    4 oz. of pork steak
    1 cup broccoli

    DINNER:

4 oz. of steak cooked in 2 pats of butter
    1 small tomato
    1/2 california avocado

90 ounces of water throughout the day!

When I put this in FitDay it comes up to 24 Carbs (4%), 72% Fats, 24% Protein.

I haven't lost any weight this week so I just want to make sure that I am not eating too much!

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Re: Menu Review

Are those net carbs? It does not look like you are getting a lot of veggies there.

Half a cup of cream sounds like a lot to me. You may have to try and lower that amount a bit.

I'm not sure how to figure the net carbs...

can you refresh my memory on that so I don't have to search through my book?

        Re: Menu Review

You will have to figure out how much fiber each veggie contains and substract that. For instance half an avocado has 6 carbs but 4 of those are fiber so you are left 2 net carbs. (6-4=2)

An easier way than looking it up is to use www.fitday.com It is a webpage that will help you figure it out for you. That is what I (and many here) use. Have you tried it? Personally I love it.

I use Fitday every day...so maybe I'm eating too few?? I thought I was probably going overboard.

Where do I find that information on Fitday?

Under carbs fitday will list your total carbs - Say 24. And then on the next line it will list the fiber - say 8. You have to do the math yourself (24-8=16) So really that was (only) 16 net carbs that day.

Wow! Was I suppose to be doing this during induction?? If so I was basically starving myself! LOL

So when I pick the veggie and I look at the Nutritional Facts, I have to remember to subtract the Dietary Fiber every time? Only for the vegetables or should i do this for everything?

Well that's exciting then because I love the veggies I am eating and I wouldn't mind having more!

                  Michele,
I let fitday count it up for me and then I just keep an eye on the totals. And yes this is how it is supposed to work. Great that you like veggies. I keep working on adding mine. I certainly eat a lot more veggies now than I ever did before.

                    Well your numbers look great!

I'm excited that it means more mushrooms and more broccoli or cauliflower!

This diet has been very easy for me so far but the weight is dropping off so slowly that I am just trying to figure out how to speed it up. I've been on the diet for over a month and seem to be doing okay other than the momentary slip up with the Carbs.

Thank you so much for your assistance. Now hopefully I will be able to get over this hurdle that has kept me at a fluctuating 169.2 for a week!

I would definately cut back on the cream. I find it is a big staller when I have too much.

                          Re: Menu Review

Just to add the daily cream limits that are listed under the 'beverages' section of the list of allowed foods
cream (heavy or light); limit to two to three tablespoons a day; note carbohydrate content
From time to time you can have more as long as it isnt stopping your weightloss
                          Special Category Foods

To add variety, each day you can also eat ten to twenty olives, half a small avocado, one ounce of sour cream or three ounces of unsweetened heavy cream, as well as two to three tablespoons of lemon juice or lime juice. But be aware that these foods occasionally slow down weight loss in some people, and may need to be avoided in the first two weeks. If you seem to be losing slowly, moderate your intake of these foods.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

                            Re: Menu Review

I must have read wrong then. Where The Power Of Five is listed in my book it says 1/2 cup of heavy cream so I thought this was acceptable once you start OWL.

I actually measured it out today and I'm not even using 1/4 cup. It's more like 1/8 of a cup.

I cannot believe that I was messing up the vegetables so badly. I am a smart, educated woman but for some reason I was really confused. I wasn't even putting enough carbs in my body. No wonder my weight seemed to move so slowly.

Last night I sat down and made a list of the vegetables that I have here in the house and went through and found them all on FitDay and calculated exactly how many net carbs are in each cup. I ended up being able to have about three times the veggies I was eating before.

I was seriously depriving myself of veggies! I also need to learn to spread them out more. I don't eat vegetables with breakfast and rarely with lunch so I know this can spike your blood sugar to eat so many vegetables in one sitting so I will start spreading them out but by doing the vegetables the way I was doing them before. When I wasn't calculating the NET carbs there weren't many vegetables on my plate at all so I was almost "saving" them!

I'm excited to have the opportunity to incorporate more veggies in. I think I will stay on rung 1 of OWL though until I get my body used to the RIGHT amount of veggies!

Ladies, thank you for all your help. I'm sure I will be back with more questions and more confusion.

When I put this in FitDay it comes up to 24 Carbs (4%), 72% Fats, 24% Protein.

I haven't lost any weight this week so I just want to make sure that I am not eating too much!

That's too much cream---even for Induction!

You aren't eating enough vegetables. During Induction you should have been eating 3 cups of the vegetables on the Induction Acceptable Foods list.

Rung 1 of OWL is adding 5 net carbs of the Induction vegetables to those 3 cups you were already eating during Induction.
