  • nuts and berries and OWL

OK, I have a question...I'm on Owl rung 4, berries and I know the first week you should try a new food only three times a week but what about after the first week? Say nuts, Could I have a serving size every day? I measured them into individual baggies with 1/4 cup in each baggy. Could I have them twice a day, say once at lunch and one for a snack later on? Could I do the same for berries after this week? I have enough carbs and they're not a trigger food for me but I didn't know if we were limited to only 1 serving a day. Thanks, Kathie

Nuts are Rung 3, so I don't understand why you skipped over them.

Anyhow, for nuts/seeds, the serving size is 1 ounce. The exception is cashews which are limited to 1/2 ounce.

For berries and other OWL foods, the serving size is 5 net carbs. 5 net carbs of strawberries is about 1/2 cup, but 5 net carbs of blueberries is about 1/4 cup and 2 tablespoons of kidney beans is 5 net carbs. So using cups doesn't work in OWL.

If you choose, you can have 2 net carbs of the rung food in the morning and the remaining 3 net carbs for a snack. But you are limited to 5 net carbs. If you have a very high CCLL, like over 65, you may need to double up on Rung servings.

After the first week of trying a new food, you should try it everyday. If you have blood sugar problems with them, then you make a mental note that the food is a 'once in a while' food for you, rather than a daily food.

I didn't skip the nut rung. What I'm wondering is after I've tried them and they don't trigger me, which they don't, can I have more than one serving a day? Could I have 1 oz of nuts in the morning and another 1oz at night? Or 5 carbs of berries for lunch and another 5 carbs for dinner, if of course I still have enough carbs left for them.

If you want to add more than the OWL addition of 5 net carbs or one ounce of nuts/seeds (1/2 ounce of cashews) you need to stay an extra week on that rung while you see if adding the extra carbs affects your weight loss or your blood sugar.

I wanted to add more veg on rung one so stayed there for several 5 net carb additions.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
