If you ever add real sugar, it would be during Maintenance Phase.
I don't use sugar substitutes by choice and I don't miss the sugary taste of foods. In fact, I've found the natural sweetness of foods, like certain veggies and fruits to be a better tasting sweetness than that of sugar or the sugar substitutes.
If you can't have the artificial substitutes like Splenda or NutraSweet, you might want to try out stevia.
As far as I can tell from the book, by the time you reach maintenance, you have added back small amounts of most foods, unless you show an intolerance to something. Some of these foods such as whole wheat bread will have sugar in them, but I don't think adding sugar to your normal cooking, eating, baking, is ver allowed. Remember too, sugar is pure carb and no nutrition, so even on maintenance it would be a waste.
