  • Medical interruption

I had a minor surgery last week on Friday and was freaked out when I got on the scale Sunday and found I had GAINED weight.

I did cheat in the recovery process -- ate some graham crackers when waking up from anesthesia, and ate a turkey sandwich on rye before going home.

But I have been completely back on track since. I know by the way my clothes fit that I am smaller by inches. My friend says that I probably was so pumped full of glucose (had at least 5 bags) that it was not a true reading.

So, I decided not to weigh myself this week. I'm afraid to. I don't want to find out I gained. Am I too psyched out here? I don't want to get into a mental battle here with the scale.
Oh, I've also not been able to exercise till I get clearance again.

    be calm.

i too, have gone through some major surgery and the meds, the lack of exercise, the lack of oomph that follows can do horrid things to our bodies.

cut yourself some slack and give your body time to heal and get back to how things were. it's not a license to freak out on fries but keep the big, long term picture in mind.

Glucose in stored with water molecules in the liver and muscles as glycogen. So, if you return to low carb eating, soon enough your body will use up all that glycogen, when it does the bonds holding the water and the glucose together break releasing the glucose AND the water. Just give it a couple days.

Even if you hadn't "cheated", your weight would most likely have gone up. I've had surgery three times in the last two years, and without eating a bite off plan, I have gained as much as 10 pounds over night. The nice thing was all of it came off and took a few extra with it in a short while. Just go back to eating on plan, making sure to eat your protein. Your body goes catabolic during the healing process and if it doesn't have enough dietary protein, it will use your muscle.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

If you had anestheia, I am assuming that you had IV fluids. They are loaded with sodium, so give yourself a few days. Plus when you have anesthesia, and IVs and also pain medicine can slow down the system...so hang in there. I had kidney surgery last october and gained 8 lbs by the time i left the hospital, and I couldnt eat the first couple of days but it did come off by the end of the week.
