I am not ready to begin OWL yet but I was wondering if I can drink skim milk when I reach dairy? I am so used to skim that I really do not care for any other at this point. Plus I would love to use skim to get my sugar free skim milk lattes again some day!! Thanks.

Re: Milk question
Milk is allowed during the DAiry Rung. However, try to stick with the whole milk and full fat products because, typically, the lower fat products contain added sugars to give them the same taste, texture and appearance of the full fat versions.~Megs~

Re: Milk question
kpoll - sugar free skim milk lattes were my thing too.. i spoke to a barista the other day who suggested... (its was hot so we were talking iced) 1 shot over ice with sugar free vanilla, and 3 tblsp. half and half... i had a sip and it was good, stronger coffee taste than the lattes but still good. and to top it off she said it would cost the same as an iced coffee.. a lot less than a latte... maybe when we get to the milk rung we can experiement more !

Re: Milk question
Sugarsack - Thanks for the suggestion!! I will try it. How many carbs do you figure that to be?
Megs - I was under the impression that the milk sugar did not affect your blood sugar levels as did other types sugar because it was natural sugar. I have skim milk here that my dd and dh have been using and it only says on the ingredients as nonfat milk with Vit A and D added. Does that make it ok??
Thanks in advance.

Re: Milk question
Natural sugar is still sugar. And on Atkins we have to thread carefully.
I don't think sugar is added to skim milk (at least not in Canada) but what happens is that when they remove the fat of the milk the carb portion gets bigger (it is a relative thing) Skim milk is therefor more carby than whole milk. Milk is generally carby and it just take a bit to get up to 5 carbs in a hurry so even on the dairy rung you have to be carefully with it.

Re: Milk question
You also want to stick to the full fat products because Atkins is a "high" fat diet.~Megs~

Re: Milk question
Sorry Liv, but I got a chuckle out of this one. I pictured each of carefully choosing which "threads" on ADBB we should reply to!Originally posted by liv View PostAnd on Atkins we have to thread carefully.
I was a skim milk nut before ADBB. It was my liquid refreshment of choice, and between my six year old son and I, we could polish off 3 gallons a week! However, I only ever switched to skim "back in the day" because it was considered "healthier" by the same corny establishment that promotes a low fat, low calorie diet. To be honest, I'm hoping I can add a little whole milk to my future on this WOE -- after years of skim, whole would be practically like a milkshake! In the meantime, I have my occasional iced coffee with a generous splash of heavy cream which satisfies my tastebuds.Eric

Re: Milk question
About the lactose.......
I remember reading somewhere that the authors of the GO Diet said lactose doesn't affect blood sugar the same way as glucose would or something to that effect.
Well, they base that on how lactose is digested by the body. Lactose is a glucose molecule stuck onto a galactose molecule. An enzyme in your stomach, breaks the bond between them. So you get a glucose and a galactose molecule. I think the GO Diet people say that since the lactose splits into a glucose and galactose, then you may only count only the glucose portion or roughly half the listed sugars in dairy.
BUT, they don't mention that galactose is also converted to glucose in the liver before it is released into the bloodstream.~Megs~

Re: Milk question
Yep so even though the digestion of the ,ilk sugar is a different chemical process, it is still sugar when it is converted.
It is the fat in the diet that gets so many of the weight loss mechanisms working. Shoot for 65% fat in your diet while on Induction.
