  • multigrain bread

What would you guys consider low carb for wholegrain bread? I've been on the grains rung for a few weeks now and really looking at pre-maint. We don't have low-carb bread here, just different varieties of multigrain bread (one is soy and flax etc). Found one that is 14g/slice and doesn't list white flour as an ingredient (unless its hidden under another name)

The low-carb bread around here runs from 6-9 carbs per slice.

the bottom line is as long as the flours are whole grain and the sweetners are minimal Dr Atkins said whole grains bread were okay but not regular foods. You want one from a bakery and not commercial he says in AFL for some reason. rye them out if you can find whole grain flat breads thry have less carbs

Thanks you two, I looked through the entire bread range at the supermarket and this was the lowest, plus it was soy and flax, so I figured it would be better.

Next time I go to the city, I'll try out a bakery

Felt weird buying bread though, gotta say.

I found it felt weird too. and the funny thing is now that I can have it in maint? I still rarely do. I have a loaf of low carb bread that has been in my freezer for at least 8 weeks now! I'd rather have a plate of veggies now for 8g of carbs then bread....I can't believe i just said that! LOL

Yeah, I've really been playing the past few days with higher carb days to see mainly how it affects any cravings. So far so good.

Bread was never a problem before atkins, I'd hardly eat the stuff, just nice having something quick and easy for lunch though.

What sort of things are you having in maintenance to keep your carb levels high enough sadie? I figure if I add in fruit plus either wholegrain bread or sweet potatos/other starchies at say one portion a day it should do it. I plan to completely stay away white flour and pasta type stuff as it flares up my IBS, and sugar is just the reason I got this way in the first place, so that stays out too.

I've actually added more higher carb veggies like butternut quash, more pumpkin, peas etc and that brings it up. I do also have the odd sweet potato/potato but not often i'm afraid i can't control myself lol. I also love to check out higher carb recipes, though i haven't had time to make to many. Even in maintenance I'm still exploring new foods. I was struggling for a while keeping my %'s in check, i just seem to eat too much protein so i figured the veggies will bring up the carbs and bring the proteins down which it has. I'm actually at my 1 yr anniversary now and at goal and it's amazing I'm still finding it's all still such a learning experience.

My CCLM is around 80-100g per day..so it does get up that high occaisionally, but I will admit i usually stay between 30-50. Not that I try, just becuase i seem to like the lower carb foods and am comfortable with my diet.

I've also tried adding some fruits but not many that I like are in season and are brutally expensive, so i have some occaissonally when they go onsale. I can't wait till more are in season, I was never a fruit eater before, but then again i would have never touched veggies either..amazing how we can change!

In case you want to make your own, Gabi's World Famous Bread is a good low carb one

Even the microwave flax bread, and my own recipe for multigrain bun has been giving me psychological grief lately. Makes me want other breads. Yes, at this stage I could have them, so why do I feel so guilty when I do?

if you can get oat fiber not oat bran nullos recreation of the OSOLO rolls is great low carb bread.

I added more of the lower GI stuff like more legumes and berries and nuts to my foods. I've had 2 sweet potatoes and I added corn bran when i was a grain OWLer so I could make corn foods again. I'm an all or none person so I can't do the higher carb grains like popcorn although I surprized myself and only had 1 cup last month but I really really wanted the whole kettle and the effects of the restaint for me are worse then the not having so I avoid it all.

I hope yopu don't have that problem

That's exactly how I think..especially with things like pasta and potatoes. I promised myself that i would have some french fries (not too many..but at least a few!) when i hit goal..and I never have. I'm afraid I wont stop. I've lived a year w/o them..i'm sure i can live w/o them a bit longer.

Surpisingly i've been able to control myself with popcorn...A couple of handfuls and i'm happy. though I don't make it at home..i'm sure then i wouldn't stop. Just have a handful when at the movies iwth the kids or at a friends. Usually the bowl's getting passed around so it moves far enough away i guess!

The health food store out here has low carb bread for 3g/slice (maybe 4). I can't remember what brand it was since I don't go there much.

My hubby who is not on Atkins but is relatively low carbing with me, will not eat the low carb breads because he doesn't like their taste or texture. I found a wonderful multigrain bread that is flourless and around 14g net carbs. The brand is called Ezekiel. The bread is organic and comes in several varieties like multi grain, sesame and even cinnamon raisin. You can find that bread in most health food stores in the refrigerated section and even some mainstream grocery stores are now carrying it in their token "health food" sections.

You guys are great, I know some people can do maintenance as 'eat what you want within reason' but that isn't me either as I can't control sugar.

Got no problem with potatoes, but I think of them as such an empty food anyway that I'd rather have pumpkin or something else.

So far so good with the bread, no probs limiting portions and I'm not at the store buying up large on chocolate so the cravings are fine.
