  • Have I been a bad girl?

I am been feeling rather guilty. I just finished the dairy rung and I feel like I botched it. On the list it says that we can have low carb ice cream. So every single night for two weeks I have enjoyed a Breyers low carb ice cream bar (5 net grams). They are sooo good. I just felt like it was my one treat. I know I messed up because you are only supposed to have the food every other day but I just couldn't help myself. I also feel like it is too could to be true like I shouldn't be having them at all. When I first started eating them I definately noticed craving increases but now they are gone. Did I screw up? Should I quit the bars?

    Hey Ashley,

You can guess what my advice will be, can't you?

OK, let's see... First of all, the issue of treats. Using food as a treat is a bad idea from the start, as this is the attitude that caused most people to gain weight in the first place. But beside this, let's say you do allow yourself a treat from time to time. A treat, as I see it, is somehow equivalent to a reward. You can reward yourself with something sweet for a big accomplishment for example, but do you really have a reason for rewarding yourself daily?!

Second, the issue of ice cream specifically, and this is purely my personal opinion and others might disagree. The point of Atkins, other than losing weight, is learning to lead a healthier life and to make smarter food choices. Smarter food choices means going for "natural", less processed foods. Look for the ingredients in the ice cream bars and compare them with the ingredients in yogurt. You'll see (though not seeing, but admitting is the difficult part here) that the later is obviously a smarter choice. So why use your allowed extra 5 carbs on ice cream instead? Your health is more important than the 2 minutes lustful happiness of your sweet taste buds.

Third, if you decide to keep eating the bars on a regular basis, check if they stall you or not. If they stall or slow your weight loss, it's (obviously) better to ditch them.

I'm with Georgiana on the thoughts. i know i feel into this trap with SF jello and whipped cream It became a "treat" which i indulged in almost nightly. I would start thinking about it again all day long. I also would eat is as a true treat - meaning I wasn't "hungry" or neededing sustinance I recognized the negative behavior and dispelled my evening routine.

I'm not, because we did it once (home made heavy whipped cream) and I could see how it would happen to me! I was LOVING it far too much.

I'm staying away from the stuff except for very rare occasions!

Re: Have I been a bad girl?

              Good advice everyone!
Admiting is so hard and so is breaking the habbit. I have thought a lot latley about how so much of this process in the early stages is breaking the habbit. I smell things and see things and think poor me, oh I want that so bad and then i think, I actually don'tand it's more of a habbit to want them being that there is no craving. So to admit to all of you I have stayed far away from anything sweet and am still considering if I want to make a low carb pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving because I don't want to fall off and I can't trust myself at this point. The younger more stupid me would have made up several batches of pie to "test them". Sad but true.

What about the dessert recipes on the forum? Are those okay?

I think all low carb desserts are okay as long as you are on the right rung and you only have them occasionally. I know I personnaly WILL NOT go through life and not enjoy a dessert. But only maybe on a weekend, birthday, HALLOWEEN, or such should be fine!

That's really the trick, isn't it?

Break your habits and your routine so that you can have these things occasionally and not go on a binge.

Unless you have a food addiction, or an allergy, these things once in a while in moderation shouldn't be a big deal...
