  • Question about Rung 1--how sad!

Ok, no one yell at me or tell me to re-read my book for asking, but I have decided to get off of induction that I've been doing forever and try to get through the rungs without screwing up (not sure I still understand the whole process).

Anyway, I already eat veggies on induction like broccoli, lettuce, cucumbers (mainly in salads and dishes) and now rung 1 is MORE veggies?

If I am reading this right, I bump my carbs up to 25 per day and the extra 5 carbs should ONLY be veggies?

That would mean during certain days up to 10-15 of my carbs would all be veggies.

    Is that right?

Basically - yep. Same veggies as induction, just add 5 more carbs/day vs. the carbs you were eating on induction.

For example, I averaged 18 net carbs/day during induction, so Rung 1 I was aiming for 23 net carbs/day. I added in tomatoes, which were allowed on induction but can add up in carbs pretty quick, and onions, too - bam, that's five carbs easy.

The vast majority of your carbs should be coming from veggies anyway...

I'm pretty limited on veggies since I have allergies to over 50 foods. So, I'll add 5 more carbs on the same veggies.

How long do I do rung 1? Do I stay at 25 carbs per day during that time? When do I go to rung 2? Then do I add on 5 more carbs?

Yes - stay at 25 net carbs, adding the additional 5 from induction veggies, during your Rung 1 week.

Dr. A recommended a week - see if you continue to lose weight and/or measurements during that time. If you do, continue to the next rung. If you don't - you might be unlucky and have a pretty low ACE.

He also said that our weight loss will slow down to 1-2 pounds/week, so if you lose weight slower than you did in Induction, that's the way it's supposed to be, don't freak out (this is where measuring really helps - I had weeks of zero pounds down but lost an inch on my thighs).

Do you have the book? I'm re-reading it now and finding it very helpful as I try to do OWL correctly (I know you asked for us not to say that but it's true for me right now ).

The book I have doesn't talk abut rungs at all, which is why I find this confusing...

Which one do you have? I have Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002), which is what this board uses as THE authoritative source.

Also - those stickies at the top of this forum pretty much contain the same info.

You are right even DANDR doesnt mantion the word 'rungs' when talking about the Ongoing Weight Loss phase (OWL).

Dr Atkins did describe the different food groups that we add in roughtly ascending GI order as being a 'Ladder' but he called the different groups 'level' rather than 'rungs'.

I suppose we have all just used the word 'rungs' because they are what the separate 'levels' on a ladder are usually called.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Y'know, I didn't realize that = the terminology isn't used! I think I just read it in my mind as "rungs" for there reason you suggest (rungs of a ladder)!
