  • After thanksgiving weight gain.

Well I made it through thanksgiving with only an extra half pound. I stayed on plan most of the day and only came off for the actual dinner. Back on induction for a day or so to get back in fat burning mode.

Glad we didnt fall off the wagon too bad.

      Re: After thanksgiving weight gain.

I didnt have any stomach problems. My only problem was my sugar levels were through the roof and I couldnt get them down. I ate dinner at 3 and took insulin for 100 carbs then after dinner I took more insulin for 80 carbs as I figured I had more than 100 and I will still doing corrections at midnight last night. I was checking every hour to 2 hours after dinner and my sugar was high 200's. Didnt get below 200 until midnight. Was 116 this morning.

On my normal atkins diet my sugar is under 100 most of the time. Much higher when off plan.

All I ate was a little ham, a little turkey, and some green beans.

Left everything else for the rest of the family that came over. We had 9 different desserts, I made 3 of them, never even touched them.

        Stayed in ketosis all day....

          Re: After thanksgiving weight gain.

I enjoyed the whole day cooking and getting ready for my family to come over. I only thought about my cheating and how terrible I was going to feel a couple of times. I had read that when u cheat ur stomach hurts and thought that wont happen to me I hope. But sure enough a few hours after enjoying my food which I must say came out excellent. My tummy was doing summersults (i think i wrote that right). But as I figure it's only once a year that Thanksgiving and Christmas roll around ur with family which u haven't seen in a long time. There's nothing wrong with a cheat day. I'm okay with it and today I'm right back on 3lbs back on but with a little extra mile it'll come right off. It's only a problem if u dont have the will power to take things back in control. Atkins makes me feel good I cant not stop now just because of Thanksgiving. I hope everyone enjoyed there day and here's to Atkins

              Re: After thanksgiving weight gain.

I know I am crazy. I am so freakin nuts about eating right since I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I have been keeping my sugar between 97 and 110 steadily for several weeks now. So, I am extra motivated to not cheat.

I try not to preach to anyone, but it's hard not to when family members who also have type 2 are sitting there stuffing their pie holes with pie. I just think they are idiots and must be trying to kill themselves or something.

But woe to them if they eat pie and then complain that they can't control their sugar.... I let loose then.... Chefs are not known for their compassion.....

At least you are getting back on track! That's a good thing!

                Re: After thanksgiving weight gain.

Both of your stories about the diabetes is inspiring! It's amazing how carbs affects blood sugar sooo much! I had pain in my right outer upper quadrant of my abd right about where I think my pancreas is... it made me wonder if i made it work extra hard yesterday! No pain today. No diabetes yet, but don't want it either. I just found it very interesting how cheating once can affect your levels so much! Thanks for sharing that! For a lot of us I'm sure we are 'borderline' so it's good to remember how much a cheat can hurt us in ways we aren't even aware of if we aren't checking our own sugars. Thanks for sharing. Tomorrow I'm making a beeline to the band wagon and jumping back on!

                  Re: After thanksgiving weight gain.

Wow, I love reading the different posts this morning. I cheated Thursday and Friday. I started Atkins Oct 29 never doing this program before. Here is what I have learned from this cheating experiment-- I have GAS - enough to fuel my part of the universe (I live in farm country where we use a lot of gas) after a month without bloating and gas --This program keeps the gas at the gas station. Heart burn, enough to burn a hotel down to the ground, This program prevents forest fires!! I am constipated, this program keeps the sewer lines unclogged. I
I had a hard time going to sleep last night after sleeping like a baby for the first time in my adult thanks to the program. This program works alot like Ambien.
Plan for today--water water water, ketosis.
I do have one question Do I start the induction all over?

You're a better man than I am... (well, yeah, but you know what I mean).

I just had to eat stuffing. I kept it well under control (a cup and a half total over two days - yep, I measured it) but add to that the other veggie carbs - knocked me right out of ketosis and I'm back on the induction train starting today for a wee bit to get back into fatburner mode.

I'm proud I cheated so little, all things considered. I definitely do NOT want to go back to a high carb lifestyle - it make me groggy and sick.

It confirmed to me that I have made the right decision, switching to this lifestyle.

It also gives me time to shop better for the Legume rung and the skip back to Berries rung I plan on doing when I complete Legumes.

                      Hello Susie,

I didn't notice any bad side affects from cheating except my high sugar levels. If you have been on induction since Oct I would think no would be your answer to a full 2 week induction. Most usually go back on induction to induce ketosis then go back to the carb level they were on before cheating. So if you were on rung 1 or 2 you would do induction for a few days then go back to those rungs.

                        Re: After thanksgiving weight gain.

I hosted Thanksgiving and we had a low carb buffet! It was awesome.

Appetizers we had veggie dip (low carb homeade) with celery and carrots (passed on the carrots). In adition to potato chips I put out pork rinds. My family has NEVER had a pork rind at a family event and they were DEVOURED!

Drinks: the typical but we had diet tonic water and made vodka tonics with lime for something out of the ordinary.

Dinner: Turkey, cauliflower "hashbrown" casserole, Spinach and gruyere bake (low carb), and salad bar. There was stuffing, rolls and sweet potatoes - but I passed.

Dessert: we had pumpkin pie for the carbers and I made a Low Carb pumpkin cheesecake with an almond crust that was TOO DIE FOR yummy. My guests at all but 1 tiny piece of the cheese cake and 3/4 of the pie was left over!

I probably ate too much cheese for the day but basically stayed on plan....best part???? I didn't feel left out, didn't miss a thing, the scale stayed the same and no sugar hangover!

                          Re: After thanksgiving weight gain.

I really didn't cheat so to speak for Turkey day, but I did have a tablespoon of dressing (I measured it) I was the cook for the day, so my guests were treated to atkins friendly dishes, unknowingly of course. I did make a non atkins friendly dressing, and there were the white devil dinner roles. The pies were sugar free for once this year. I made the feax mashed potatoes and used Xanthium gum to thicken the gravy. They had no clue. I steered away from all desserts, and bread besides the one tablespoon of dressing. I know I probably ate more than my induction friendly carb count. I ate tons of feau potatoes, and asparagus, and salad. My treat for the day was a sugar free jello with whipped cream from the can. <1 carb < 1 sugar. The funny thing is this. I had been in extended induction for two weeks and hadn't lost even a oz in over two weeks. I held the same weight until this morning, and whoosh!!! I lost 4 pounds. Does this mean, I need to go onto OWL or was I not getting enough of something on extended induction? Any ideas?

Lots of people stall on extended induction and find they start moving again when they go to OWL - it sounds like your body is ready to make the move!

Tell me more about the xanthan gum gravy. Did it taste off? was it lumpy? I just thickened ours with rice flour (MIL has celiac's) and I didn't eat it. But I'd like to know for future reference. i have XG in my pantry. Cna you use it like corn starch to thicken a stir fry too?

Yes, I have found that it works just like corn starch. I don't taste any thing different. I always made my gravies with white flour, (make the rue with oil then add liquid)... so corn starch was almost strange to me. XG was not lumpy, I just added warm broth to it in a medium bowl and whisked til smooth added to boiling pan and it thickened up over time. I have used it to make sausage gravy over oopsie rolls in the mornings. I just added it to hot sausage and sausage grease in pan and added water and a bit if whipping cream. Works nicely. Also in stir fry, and soups it is a nice thickener if you like your soups and stir fry on the thicker side.
