  • went off but in ketosis = no induction?

Thanks for your holiday post Not2Late. Just to make sure I understand...

I went off my Atkins plan for the first time on Christmas. I ate a brownie that was about 2 1/2 inches square. It was very good and brownies are my favorite. It was hard not to just eat everything I wanted after that, but I didn't, it was the only "bad" thing I ate. I did areobic exercise for about an hour the morning after the brownie. I was traveling for a few days, and did not count carbs, but I only ate things that were permissible, and but for the brownie, I think I probably ate about the right amount or a little extra carbs (I'm at 25 net carbs per day). I felt a little bad that I went off, but it was my first real cheat in 4 months, so I'm trying not to beat myself up about it. I notice it is hard to get right back on plan though - but so far I have not strayed more.

According to the test stixs, I never went out of ketosis. After eating the brownie it was a very light purple, but it indicated slight ketosis. I tested each morning and night, and by the end of the day after Christmas it was back up to its normal moderate ketosis level on the stix.

So my plan is to get back stricktly on plan tomorrow. Since I'm still in ketosis I'm hoping that I don't need to do Induction, and can just return to my normal 25 net carbs a day and get back on my exercise routine. Is this ok, or do I really need to do Induction or cut back on net carbs?

Everyone's body is different. I find that I can stay in ketosis at approximately 25 grams. I don't think you need to go back to introduction again.

As ceemarie suggested, if you are still in ketosis just carry on eating according to your OWL level after eating offplan.

You must have stayed below your CCLL even with the brownie, so it might imply you have a reasonably high one!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Thanks! I weighed myself this morning, and I am still down .2 pounds for the week - not much, particularly since I was down a couple pounds in the begining of the week before my trip started (i.e., I gained a little during my trip), but I'm glad I'm not up for the week. I'm going to get fully back on plan today. (Just got back from my trip last night.)

7Miriam, like Elizellen said you can go right back to your level in OWL. Dr. Atkins says to go back to Induction for a few days, if necessary, to get back into ketosis and "get your metabolism fired up again". Since you're already in ketosis there's no need to go back to Induction.

Another interesting this he says in DANDR 2002 (which goes with what Elizellen said about your CCLL) is "Lipolysis testing strips can also help you ascertain your CCLL in many cases. They generally stop turning color at a point a little below your CCLL. When that happens, your CCLL will be only a few carbohydrate grams higher. However, you should be aware that once you are consuming 50 or more grams of carbohydrates a day, the LTS will no longer register a change in color. So long as you continue to lose pounds and inches and experience no recurrence of your pre-Atkins levels of hunger, cravings and other symptoms, rest assured that all is well. You are still functioning on a primarily fat-burning metabolism even though you may not be producing enough ketones to show up in your urine."

Way to go getting right back on plan!

I've always wondered where they came up with this number..as long as i'm exercising i've registered in ketosis on sticks to 100g's a day. Interesting.

There is something called post-exercise ketosis I believe.
Is your CCLL that high as well?

Re: went off but in ketosis = no induction?

I became carb phobic when i was losing an never got the nerve to get my carbs high enough to figure out my CCLL. Yes, silly, I know. I eventually got over the phobia while in maintenence and gradually got my carb level up to 100.

Is post exercise ketosis and ketosis not the same thing?

Re: went off but in ketosis = no induction?

As far as I understand it, it is the same chemical process. When you exercise you use up your stored carbs and then (you may) go into a temporary ketosis. But the ketosis people experience while in induction/first part of OWL is a constant thing because they eat very reduced carb amounts all the time. Post exercise ketosis will go away once you eat your "normal" carbs again.
