  • Any tips on doing OWL while avoiding the scale?

I'm starting OWL for the first time tomorrow - I want to do it by the book, and add back 5g of carbs from veggies. I've been tracking my foods in Fitday.

I have to be gluten free because of celiac disease, and the celiac seems to have really messed with my metabolism. I gain weight SUPER easily, even when not overeating. I think it's because I have not been absorbing nutrients from my food (due to the celiac), and now my body is holding on to every calorie. I gained 10lbs almost immediately when I went gluten free, which is NO help when I need to lose at least 40 lbs.

The scale is depressing me, because it has been bouncing all over the place during induction. I want to avoid it for awhile (as long as I can stand it - one week, two weeks, a month?) but how can I tell if I am at my critical carb level without it? Should I do some measurements, use the ketostix? Does anyone have any advice? I don't want the scale to discourage me.

    Thanks!

Re: Any tips on doing OWL while avoiding the scale?

i just wanted to share a similar experience. when i started avoiding foods that caused my IBS i gained around 10 pounds as well. it was a result of not being malnourished because i didn't digest food. i know it is depressing to see the scale go up, but for me i tried to think of it as only a short term thing because knowing that i'm absorbing vitamins and minerals and potassium, will help me become healthier in the future. I don't know about you, but i have gotten a lot more energy back after avoiding 'trigger' foods, and feel like i can actually exercise and walk up stairs without getting faint.

i think if celiacs is anything like IBS, then regulating the digestive tract is key. if i keep my level of fibre even (find the amount that is not too much nor too little) then the scale stops bouncing around. i don't know any way to measure the CCL without the scale though... anyways i hope there was something in here that helped.
