  • question about unsweetened organic shredded coconut

ok - so WHEN am I allowed to use coconut? Is it part of the berries rung? Is it even in the book?...

I was at whole foods today and they have it in bulk 1 pound for $2.99

I wrote down the nutritional info & it is as follows:

    1/2 cup
    260 calories
    25 grams fat
    22 grams saturated fat
    10 grams carbs
    7 grams fiber
    (3 grams net carbs)
    3 grams sugar
    3 grams protein

I wouldn't be using a LOT of it - but I'm thinking it'd be good in my "faux oatmeal" (made with flax seeds) and if I onlly use 1 tbsp it'd be
(this is all dividing the top at 1/2 cup by 8 since there's 8 tbsp in 1/2 cup:

    1 tbsp
    32.5 calories
    3.12 grams fat
    2.75 grams sat. fat
    1.25 grams carbs
    0.875 grams fiber
    (0.375 grams net carbs???)
    0.375 grams sugar
    0.375 grams protein

IS coconut legal on atkins?? what rung is it allowed on?

Can anyone explain the "RUNG" meanings / rules?
I assume it is a stage in the diet but I do not see this explained in the book.

    Thanks,
    Crystal

Coconut is just that, a nut. It's allowed on rung 3, seeds and nuts. It's listed on page 82 of the Dr. Atkins Carbohydrate Gram Counter which is a small book separate from the DANDR.

FABULOUS and thanks!!! I'm really looking forward to the nuts rung as I LOVE nuts...but I will have to dig out my book and carefully read about the rung as I absolutely do NOT want to over do it.

I know i'm gonna have to really moderate how I eat certain things such as my natural peanut butter - macadamia nuts - sunflower seeds - and now, coconut! plus, i'll be able to add in more flax seeds - but again, I can't do ALL that in one day! lol. so anyways - thanks for the info on coconut!

and - btw - i wasn't going to assume it was a nut just because the name "nut" is in it...just like how a peanut really isn't a nut it's actually a legume...

Be aware that nuts and seeds are limited to 1 ounce during OWL, not 5 net carbs, according to the Power of Five list in the book. The exception are cashews which are limited to 1/2 ounce.

Re: question about unsweetened organic shredded coconut

Not really. As with any new food group, you should only eat it 3 times a week. So, let's say, you eat 1 ounce of macadamia nuts on Monday, 1 ounce on Wed and 1 ounce on Saturday. Never more than one ounce and never more than 3 times a week.

thank you very much, georgiana!!! I honestly did NOT realize that it wasn't more than 3 times a week.
i think i asked that on someone else's thread a while back and don't remember ever getting an answer.

i really should get my book out and re-read it. :P
