  • Does anyone feel the same?

I am on my second day of OWL!
I have been doing great, having salads with meat and Mayo and i made Cauliflower Pizza.I have been weighing and counting every single carb, i am on Rung 1, 5g more carbs from veg...thing is i feel i am eating a lot more than i did on Induction, lots and lots of veg.
Anyone that has done OWL, did they feel like that?

    Thanks

Hi Dannielle and welcome to OWL. Yes - I do feel that the extra 5 carbs of veg on rung one makes a huge difference to the amount you feel you are eating. I am on rung 1 as well. Thinking it through - I suppose if you are eating your 20 carbs a day on induction and around 12 of those are ideally coming from your veg, then when you add another 5 carbs of veg you are adding almost half as much veg again.

Edited to say - D'oh! I need to get my brain in gear - you are not necessarily adding twice as many veg in by weight because that will obviously depend on which veg you are eating. You are however adding that amount as far as the carb count goes - so you will be getting the filling power and the 'plate power' - ie how full your plate looks and, by adding more, and perhaps some different veg - perhaps we get a psychological boost as well from seeing (and eating!) that extra food. Anyway - I do know what you mean about how it feels!

OWL Phase puts to rest all those rumors that "you don't eat enough vegetables on Atkins."

The volume of the veggies is alot. So you have to get creative with preparation. For example, use sauces. A jar of roasted sweet peppers makes a flavorful sauce when the peppers are pureed. Add vinegar and oil (and maybe some herbs) to that puree and you have nice salad dressing. Green beans (haricot vert beans) can be cooked a coarsely pureed for a bean mash for a nice vegetable side dish. Cauliflower can be pureed and used as a sauce for vegetable casseroles.

And don't forget, all the Induction veggies can be cooked and that will generally reduce their volume. Dr. Atkins never writes that the "Salad" list vegetables have be eaten raw. For a while, sauteed or grilled Romaine lettuce hearts were a rage in trendy restaurants. And I find that it makes an interesting cooked vegetable in stirfries.
