  • Completed Induction..Now I've got Questions

    Hello all

Well, I just completed induction on Saturday and lost most of my weight on the 1st week. I was thinking of staying on Induction a little longer but the scale has not budget since last Thursday or Friday. I'm not discouraged as it was still a great amount of weight loss overall for me (about 13 lbs).
So... I have decided to "move on" to OWL which I hope will help me lose more weight. I have ordered the Atkins updated Diet Revolution book(released in 2002, printed in 2003) so I can't wait to read up about the diet but for now I need a little help.

I noticed that the Atkins website emphasizes eating "lean" proteins..back in 1994 I read the old book Dr. Atkins wrote while he was still alive and I surely remember how he emphasized eating lots of FAT. So has the "Atkn's Diet" been changed by whomever is running the Co. since poor Dr. Atkins kicked the bucket???

I also recall that Bars and other things on the allowed foods (light creamer?) were also not allowed but the website says these things are. I'm sure they are trying to make money on their products though! (If they have tweaked this diet, I hope the book I just bought will have the original version though, anyone know?)

Now.. Has anyone tried Stevia? Is this ok during Atkins? I know Sucralose (Splenda) is allowed but I'm a little concerned at what I have read on it (how it was really more closely related to pestecides than sugar and a few other horrors) so I'm trying to opt for a "healthier" more natural alternative.
I just bought PureVia and want to make sure it is not going to be detrimental to my program. Anyone tried or using this product or othe Stevia brands?

Also..can I use Ketchup again on OWL ( I know to look for sugar and carb content) but is it actually "legal" ?

Sorry for beeing such a Newbie but...
I have between 65-80 LBS Id like to lose and just curious if anyone else has lost approx. this much and how long it took you to lose this amt?

All responses are appreciated. YOU GUYS ROCK

Yes, they did "tweak" the diet. Atkins, as Dr. Atkins designed it, is indeed a high fat diet. This of course doesn't mean you cannot eat lean meats. You just have to be sure you eat them with some fat (e.g. fried, skin on the chicken, dressing).

I also recall that Bars and other things on the allowed foods (light creamer?) were also not allowed but the website says these things are. I'm sure they are trying to make money on their products though!
Light cream is allowed in the 2002 book. Bars are also allowed, as an "emergency food". Of course, this is not how Atkins Nutritionals promotes the Atkins products today. They contain ingredients "illegal" for Induction or for the first rungs of OWL, and are known to stall many people.

If they have tweaked this diet, I hope the book I just bought will have the original version though, anyone know?
This is the book we go by here, DANDR 2002: Amazon.com: Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution: Robert C. Atkins: Your Store
It's the last one written by Dr. Atkins.

Yes, Stevia is allowed. I prefer SweetLeaf as it has fewer bulking agents than other brands do, but PureVia is also okay. The ingredients in SweetLeaf are stevia extract and inulin fiber; in PureVia they are erythritol, isomaltulose, stevia extract, cellulose powder and natural extracts.

Also..can I use Ketchup again on OWL ( I know to look for sugar and carb content) but is it actually "legal" ?
Ketchup, as long as it has no "illegal" ingredients, is allowed even during Induction. You can buy it (I believe Heinz has one sweetened with sucralose) or make your own.

FYI, The Heinz low carb Ketchup taste like the real thing to me. Many of the others do not. I know you don't want to take in a lot of Sucralose, but this really is good!

DR. A. took a lot of heat from the "saturated fat is going to kill you" crowd. IMHO advocating lean meat is just an attempt to seem more friendly to an establishment that preaches low fat.

As to the frankenfoods.... IMHO they are an attempt to make the diet more attractive to people who have an unhealthy relationship with sugar (just about anybody who's ever been on this diet).

When I first started low-carbing a couple years ago, I bought a ton of stuff from Walden Farms, all kinds of LC bars & shakes, LC baking mix, etc. What I was doing basically was trying to have LC versions of all the foods that made me fat in the first place.

I was not learning how to eat correctly and I truly believe all those chemicals and the soy in much of them gave me my current food sensitivities.

It wasn't until about a year ago that I went with a whole foods approach and started eating real foods as much as possible. I really believe that diet companies are not doing people favors with all the frankenfoods and I think it is so important to make a clean break from old style eating and develop new, healthy habits.

Re: Completed Induction..Now I've got Questions

I also stay away from all of those products. I have one bar in my cabinet for an "emergency" but I have not had it yet. Last time I was on Atkins, I had one every day.
It is so much better eating only whole foods or "real foods". There are no cravings at all.
