  • Raw Milk

I have a question...I'm interested in learning more about RAW (unpastuerized) milk. I'm listening to a low carb podcast and they are talking about how GOOD raw milk is for you.

Has anyone here ever drank raw milk? I found (online) a farmers market only blocks from my house that sells it - but I would like any information any of you might have on RAW milk...

    thanks!

I know that he was all over the website I just looked at.

Have you ever had it though?

I honestly always heard how BAD and UNHEALTHY it is for you (wait a minute, isn't that what everyone says about atkins too???!!! lol )

But I'm interested - health wise - if it would be something good to add to my diet. I'm already past the dairy rung and I think I read it does have 12 g carbs per cup - but it wouldn't have all the lactose sugars in it that pasturized milk has...

I've also read it really should only be drank straight. Shouldn't put it in hot tea or hot coffee as the heat / boiling point of the water would destroy the enzymes in it. It shouldn't be used in cooking for that same reason and goes bad in about 7 days.

Especially, though, when I do have my peanut butter, I usually do (confession time) drink a swig or two out of my husband's 1/2 gallon of milk (2% at least, i got him to switch to that and no longer skim!)...

Sounds like you've read some raw food sites. They are obsessed with enzymes I think.

Many years since I had it. I grew up on a farm so yes we had raw milk around. I did not mind it back them but it would be hard to get used to it now. I have pretty much stopped drinking milk now that I am on Atkins

I don't understand why it would have less lactose though?

yeah - i probably mistyped when i said less lactose...but from what i've read it IS soooo much healthier for you - all the vitamins still in it as well as the fat and enzymes, etc...

there IS also a dairy farm here in Indy (well, just north of) called Traders point creamery that has grass-fed dairy, which does pasturize their milk due to state laws - but i can buy it at the fresh market down the street from me...and from what i've read it's very high in the CLA's and still got all its vitamins, etc that "normal" grain-fed/pasturized milk does not contain...

i just miss milk!!! so - I think I will buy some of the traders point creamery milk first (whole milk, obviously) and see if that hinders my weight loss at all...also try and keep it to only 1/2 cup (gosh that'll be hard!) since it's still 12 g carbs per cup.

I DID find a place her around the corner from my house - but technically it is illegal to sell in indiana - so they do what's called "cow-sharing" where I need to pay $50 for transport fees and then it's $7/week for a gallon of milk. I MAY eventually do that - just not right now...

I really am trying to start eating more grass-fed beef & free range chickens instead of buying ground beef from wally world that I KNOW has been shot up with god knows what kind of hormones and corn and all that junk...
I'm very lucky though to have a store down the road from me, "Fresh Market" which i learned today ALL of their beef, chicken, lamb, pork, and even sausage (they sell none frozen, all fresh) is ALL grass-fed / free range / antibiotic free!

for example - tonight we are having NY strips...mmmm (not too bad price either - two cost $15).

              Re: Raw Milk

Like Liv, the last time I had it I was a child staying over a relative's farm. I remember the texture to be thicker and creamier.

I've had "raw" cheese and the taste is creamier and more full-bodied than the usual variety. The raw ricotta was the best ricotta I've ever had---milky and creamy. But it's a really underground/black market type thing because raw milk and raw milk products are illegal where I am...unless you get it from your own cow.

I do think the raw people have a point about the enzymes and some vitamins being lost in the heating process. But then I don't drink enough milk to benefit from those things raw milk has to offer.

Yeah - I don't either NOW (obviously) because I pretty much gave milk up when I started Atkins...and it's funny cuz as a kid I HATED drinking milk - but then as a late teen/in my 20's I absolutely LOVED milk - drank easily a gallon a week (about 1 glass a day). If I wasn't using it in my oatmeal, cereal, etc...and usually too I'd have a glass WITH those things...but of course, it was SKIM milk which I've now learned is the absolute WORST for you - but that was before when I was "brainwashed" by the low-fatties out there...lol.

I read more about raw milk and the pasteurized, non-homoginized grass-fed milk...and one thing it said is that unlike pasteurized, raw and grass-fed are very high in CLA's which is VERY beneficial to health and weight loss. Not to mention, of course, the fact that pasteurization removes the enzymes which actually give your body the ability to absorb the Vitamin D, Vitamin A & Calcium that milk is known for. Those are the three things that everyone is always told WHY you should drink milk - yet the general public doesn't realize that PASTEURIZED milk is stripped down so bad that you don't get ANY of those things if you're drinking milk (especially skim) from the store.

Plus - I've always been the kind to want to help the "little man" and NOT the big box stores - but never really knew how/what to do and realistically walmart is just so dang convenient!

But I've got some places of farms around here that sell their stuff (hey, c'mon I live in INDIANA - how many farms are there out there? I shoulda been doing this YEARS ago!). And if I can start buying my produce/meat/dairy, etc...from the little guy and ONLY buying the non-food items at walmart then I will feel much better.
