  • Rung 2 question

I am moving into rung 2 next week. I was thinking about adding in whole milk into my coffee. I am confused as to whether this is allowed. The book doesn't mention milk as an option - that I saw - but only lists examples... I think. Hrm, but I have seen people on this board mention milk as a rung 2 item.

To clarify I work two to three days a week and there is a coffee machine that makes an awesome latte! I do not use milk in my coffee at home, but do enjoy this as a work treat. (Yes, decaf!)

Also, what about yogurt? Is that okay as long as you don't eat over 5 grams?

    149.8/no weigh/ 119

    1st goal: 139 (earlier weight)
what the rungs mean to me:
    rung 1 - more veggies
rung 2 - dairy (some milk in coffee)
rung 3 - seeds, nuts (mostly sprinkled on salads)
    rung 4 - berries, melon
    rung 5 - wine -
    rung 6 - beans, hummus
    rung 7 - other fruits
rung 8 - carrots/ potatoes (nah, prolly not)
rung 9 - whole grains (fresh Dutch breads...)
    Major Goal - 128 lbs/ healthy range
    (on to pre-maintenance)

    Re: Rung 2 question

I added milk and yogurt, but only in 5 net carb increments and never on its own. That is I always used these foods as ingredients, rather than drink 5 net carbs of milk straight or eat 5 net carbs of yogurt out of the container.

I tried these two on their own and found that I wasn't missing them and didnt feel the need to have a cup of milk or eat yogurt...Actually it was weird they tasted different then what I remember and I wasn't too fond of the taste but as not2late mentioned I have used them in recipes like a smoothie or eggs.

Sure milk is OK to try. I use it sometimes in baking. I prefer cream in my coffee. Right now I am using almond milk in my tea.
Yogurt is great. One of my favorite things to eat for breakfast. Make sure it is full fat and with no added sugar. And then there is cottage cheese and ricotta and mascarpone...

          Perhaps try watered down cream?

Yes, full fat milk is allowed on Rung 2. 5 net carbs of milk is not very much (maybe .5cup?)so adding milk to your latte is a good option. As for yogurt, most (me included) like the Fage Greek yogurt you can find at Trader Joes, Whole Foods etc.

Nope, any plain yogurt is okay. Some people prefer Greek yogurt because of taste and carbs (often lower than "regular" yogurt).

I love fromage frais, and I don't know if it is the fact that I have done a few inductions, but I really cannot have more than about a half tbsp milk in my tea any more!

Oops, forgot about the low fat stuff. Yes, choose full fat---lower in carbs and less crap added. The fruit flavored ones are usually carb bombs. I've yet to find an Atkins-friendly one. But when you get to OWL Rung 4, you can add berries in it and it's yummy.
