  • Making sure I know what I'm doing b4 moving?

Thursday will be my 2 weeks on introduction... main idea 20 net carbs, 2 cups from "vegetables" and 1 cup from "other vegetables".. Also what I gather is in introduction you measure a serving, however in OWL you don't necessary measure but eat a "normal portion" and count the carbs, is this correct? (I know there is more, fat, protein, carb ratio, extra sweetners, heavy cream, 4oz cheese, ec. )

So hopefully I have this idea clear... Now, so on thursday I want to move to OWL and want to know how to do it exactly.... and I believe like this...

I will still eat 2 cups of veggies from the main veggies, and atleast 1 cup from the "other veggies" now my question is can I have 2 cups of other veggies as long as I'm not over my 25 net carbs?

Now next so after the veggie rung, I go to the dairy... Now here if I still got all my understanding correct, still eating atleast 2 cups of veggies and 1 cup of the other veggies... and now I can have yogurt or sour cream, ect... and I add 5 grams ... now is that I can only have 5 grams of additional dairy (is this a total of 9 grams of dairy ~ 4grams from cheese?)... also what if I eat my min. measurements of veggies, but I want to have 8 grams of yogurt, is this allowed?

Lastly, is it okay that I move up... I started at 370.6, had TOM and 1 cheat with peanut butter, as of today I lost down to 360.6, but gained back to 362.4 ... Should I go to extended introduction or go to OWL?

    Thanks.
    ~Amanda
It is okay if it takes me a little longer to get there, besides this is where I'm going to stay forever and that is a really long time!!!

Yes that is right. Now you have to concentrate on counting carbs. So you add 5 carb of veggies to the 3 cups you were already eating and this is it for the first week. You may want to try a new veggie - (on the list) that you did not eat in induction.

    the answer is YES

And the 5 carbs of veggies you added in rung 2

You add five carb grams of NEW dairy - one that you were not allowed on the induction and you can have it in addition to cheese. But only one new thing per week. So try out yogurt one week, milk the next, ricotta after that

NO - only 5 carb gram of the new stuff

Is is absolutely OK to move up if that is what you want to do.

Liv is awesome and answered everything beautifully. I would like to put my two cents in and say that in my experience, moving on to OWL is the best thing to do. Dr. Atkins does talk about reasons to continue extended induction. One of which is if you do have a lot to lose. So, no one could fault you for staying there.

BUT - I think that it is more important to learn to keep the weight off. To really learn how to make your way through the rungs. I have reached goal before by going extended induction the whole way and yes, it was fast. Of course, I didn't learn a thing about maintenance doing that and guess what? I am here again at the beginning of OWL.

Thus, I am a strong supporter of OWL and learning everything you can along the way.
      149.8/no weigh/ 119

      1st goal: 139 (earlier weight)
what the rungs mean to me:
      rung 1 - more veggies
rung 2 - dairy (some milk in coffee)
rung 3 - seeds, nuts (mostly sprinkled on salads)
      rung 4 - berries, melon
      rung 5 - wine -
      rung 6 - beans, hummus
      rung 7 - other fruits
rung 8 - carrots/ potatoes (nah, prolly not)
rung 9 - whole grains (fresh Dutch breads...)
      Major Goal - 128 lbs/ healthy range
      (on to pre-maintenance)

It's 5 net carbs of any Induction veggie, in addition to the 3 cups of Induction vegetables you are currently eating.

Don't use a standard of 2 cups for your OWL, because 2 cups of lettuce is about 2 net carbs and 2 cups of pumpkin puree is about 20 net carbs!

Your OWL additions are always 5 net carbs, with the exception of nuts/seeds which are limited to 1 ounce (cashews are limited to 1/2 ounce.)

Re: Making sure I know what I'm doing b4 moving?

Thanks so much ladies. Glad to know I am good on what I know thus far. I'm still not sure what I want to do as for moving up or not b/c I do still want to loose so much weight, but at the same time I would love to be able to eat from rung 1,2,3 &4... and I believe if I could do that, then I would be able to stay there forever!!!

I had done a "low-carb" "high-fat" before where I would eat my meat, cheese, mayo, nuts (cashew, peanuts, almonds) and an additional 20-25 net carbs a day. Now those additional carbs "treats" was either a Hersey Candy Bar or a glass of chocolate milk every single day!!! And I lost 99 pounds doing this. Of course life changed and I went off, but gained back very slowly and 2 pregnancies later.... Yes, that is right, no veggies!!!

So this time first I want to do it healthy and thankfully I do love veggies, secondly based upon that way of eatting it seems my body honestly looses fairly well and that these other things don't seem to affect my system to much.

Trying to eat "healthy" over the past year or so is why I desided to do Atkins once and for all b/c I realize each time I eat baked goods or breads (wheat or white) I would gain, not loose, even if all other was balanced.

So I guess my last question (which I know is my own choice) is can I move up the rung to get to the berries and stay there until I'm closer to goal? Is there any type of modified plan like that or if I move up I need to keep moving?

Thanks again for so much knowledgable guidance!

Yes you can move up to berries and stay there for a bit if you choose.

Re: Making sure I know what I'm doing b4 moving?

I'm on the berry rung and love my strawberry yogurt smoothies... I'll be skipping rung 5 since I don't drink, and the only think on rung 6 that interests me is refried beans, but they seem to be very carby, so I'ma thinkin that I'll be here on rung 4 for a while... I have enough variety that I don't feel the need to keep going up, besides I still have a lot of weight to lose and that means I have plenty of time to figure out the CCLL etc...

Sure, I've been on Rung 1 for weeks...I keep toying with moving up to rung 2...but I can't find a yogurt that's appropriate...I will move up soon though. I find that since I have a lot of weight to lose, I don't have to rush through the rungs
