  • Question

I was going to move up to Rung 4 (berries) last week but it is super hard to find affordable berries right now. I am not one to pay to much for something if it can be avoided. I know if I go to the farmers market then I could find them cheaper but it has been so hot outside and the streets are packed with children since schools are out for summer. I would rather stay in side and only go to the local store for supplies.

Now for the question, it is ok to skip Rungs but come back to them later. Example: Skip rungs 4 and 5 (I'm not a big drinker...) and go on to Rung 6 then say in a few months come back to the the skipped Rungs. I really want to move on up but not being able to get the berries have stopped me dead in my tracks.

I know I could pay the 3 euro (about 5.50 dollars) for 250gs of strawberries, but then again that is 3 euros that could be spent on more at the market, or more importantly on veggies which I like. Plus my boyfriend is going to be laid off work soon (at least they told him before hand) so we really need to start saving what little bit we can.

I know what most of you are thinking, "go to the farmers market!" Well you see, in the summer the market is so packed and hot that it because very uncomfortable for me (being very short and stuck at arm pit level of most others is not pleasant). I would rather go when it is poring rain then in the summer time. Even then I get jabbed and stepped on, smacked and pushed...it is horrible! The market is located in the middle of the city so there are always a few 1000 people there, just to give you a picture:

This is a typical spring day...in the summer everyone brings there children.

    June 21st of this year:

Anyway enough rambling...Is it ok to skip rungs and then come back to them later?

(If anyone is wondering the market is called "Haagse Markt", it is the largest open air market in the Netherlands)

    Re: Question

It is advisable to follow the rungs in order (which you know already ), but if you really want to skip OWL Rung 4 and come back to it later, you can do it. Just be aware that the foods in OWL Rung 6 are more likely to cause problems, so advance with care.

I'll skip OWL Rung 5 too. Actually, in "Atkins for Life" (the last book Dr. Atkins wrote), Dr. Atkins removed alcohol from the Carbohydrate Ladder.

Just thought I would update and say I bribed my boyfriend into going to the market for me (hehe) and he bought me 1 kilo of strawberries and like 150g of black berries. In return I am making him a strawberry cake with the mushy berries .

          Re: Question

Here, in Miami, the strawberries are all over the place. You can pay about a dollar and go pick as many as you want. The problem: I'm not that much into berries....

              Re: Question

I think berries are expensive (~$5-6 per 1/2 lb) in most W European countries.
As you go more to E, like in Romania or Bulgaria, they get cheaper (my parents pay something like 50 cents for 1 lb).

I remember living in Alabama and having wild berries growing everywhere...it was wonderful, but yeah life in a big city, in Europe, is much different then a small town in the south...or anywhere in America to be honest...

                      Re: Question

I typically go to the farmer's market early in the morning---before the crowds.

Also, if you have room to store frozen berries, freeze them for use later. They freeze surprizingly well.

                        Re: Question

I always freeze things like that. I buy in bulk and then freeze them. I have about 1/2 kilo frozen now, the other half I used in the cake for my boyfriend, which I made none carb friendly since he hasn't had one in a while...all good, house smells divine and he is happy.

PS: No I am not eating the cake, I had strawberries with yogurt and milk blinded into a smoothie. It was Yummy!
