  • extra veggies - is this ok?

I've been away for a bit and getting back on track now. I've been looking at my old menus, and realize that when I was doing Rung 4 at 35 net carbs, I often ate more than 2 cups of "other vegetables", it seems like frequently I had about 3 cups of them (along w/ my 2 cups of salad vegetables) though I did not go over my 35 NC limit. Is this ok? I was still losing pretty well, and if it's ok I'd like to continue doinig it if it is permissible, as they filled me up and I don't think had that many calories.

I don't know why, but I never thought about it before - I just assumed I could have as many permissible veggies as I wanted as long as I didn't go over my NC limit, but I just read something that made me think maybe I could only have one extra cup of them.

The way I understand it is that you add 5 net carbs to the net carbs you were eating during induction. Do that for at least a week until you determine you are still able to lose. Then you can add another 5 net carbs from the veggie rung if you like or move up another rung to be able to add those new carbs from there. Like that ...

In my case, I still eat my added carbs from veggies most of the time and have gradually added net carbs up to 35 (just starting that this week).

I'm not saying I am right, but I thought I would post what I am doing to get your post bumped back up where, hopefully, some of the more OWL experienced people will see it and respond.

As Erin said, you start OWL Rung 1 by adding 5 net veggie carbs to your Induction average menu. You can stay in OWL Rung 1 for more than one week, and then each "extra" week you can add an additional 5 net carbs of vegetables. You say you were eating 5 (right?) cups of vegetables, but I have no idea what veggies you were eating and how many net carbs were in those 5 cups. One does not add veggies back "by cup", but in 5 net carb increments, because 1 cup of lettuce is much lower in carbs than 1 cup of celeriac (celery root).

In OWL Rung 4, I imagine you were eating some fresh cheeses, yogurt, berries, nuts... right? So the 35 net carbs were not coming only from vegetables.

Re: extra veggies - is this ok?

Thanks! I've been away for a bit, and I got a little confused. I never went over 35 NC per day. I usually have about 6.5 NC of blueberries (2 ounces) and 3 NC of nuts (2 tbs almond butter) for breakfast, some cheese during the day (usually 2-4 ounces), meat and sometimes eggs, advacado, cream, olives and/or olive oil depending on the day.

I worked up to 35 NC over about a 6 month period. I think I probably originally added in 5 NC of veggies, and then as I went up more rungs, if I didn't eat something on one of the rungs during a paritcular day, for example no nuts, I would sometimes eat extra vegtables. So I'm thinking that this may be ok. I think I just got confused about adding in cups vs. carbs, and what you said helps me understand better. Thank you!
