  • Nuts Aint working for me...

I bought a jar of sugar free peanut butter. Just peanuts and salt. Has this disgusting oil floating on the top. I had 1 Tbsp last night. One this morning and two tonight. Ugh. Now more than ever, I need some of the that bread to go with it. Anyway..

I guess that I am going to have to give up the peanut butter and move onto another rung. I know that I can't eat any nuts now. I overate on a CAN of plain macadamia nuts the other day.Overdid the flaxseed with baking and so on. I feel like I could down with a bag of shell free sunflower seeds or a few pounds of almonds. So I won't even start with those.

So is that how it works? If a food isn't working for you do you stay at that rung or do you move on to something else.

I'm pretty sure you just consider that specific food a "trigger food" and either try another food in that rung, or move upward. Do you feel like you'd like to experiment with other types of nuts?

If a food is a trigger for you or stalls you, you can skip that rung. Also look to see if it's the salt that's a trigger, not just the nuts or seeds, or just certain ones. I know both peanuts and cashews are a trigger for me so I avoid them, but eat almonds, walnuts, and pecans (often in salads). The other thing to do is portion out just the amount you should eat, ex. 1 oz and put in a baggy, etc. and keep away from open containers.

I get some unsalted, non-roasted almonds in 1 oz snack packs from the bulk store and find these are nice to carry around as snacks or fillers to help tied you when it's running long between meals.

I had to skip the dairy rung as it stalls me. I only eat occasionally from various rungs, such as nuts or berries or melon here and there. I don't make it a point to eat foods of a rung, but if it comes up for an interesting recipe or while eating elsewhere, I'll eat rung foods but watch my portions and am sure to track the carbs.

        Yep.

And ... you did mix the oil in to the peanut butter, right?

I can only do unsalted plain almonds because I don't like them enough to go past my portion of one ounce. I do sometimes use almond flour and I admit that sometimes I will use regular old Jif or Skippy in a recipe. (((SHOCKER))) The world doesn't fall apart even though I know it's not what I should be using.

Definitely skip and move on if you feel these food are a problem and you know you won't trust yourself to eat them. But be careful---I have some of the same issues with berries that I have with nuts :O

I saw a tip somewhere here about keeping nuts in the freezer in one-ounce portions. So you just take out one portion the night before you need it. I know I will not be able to keep a jar of peanut butter but I plan to try that with whole nuts.

If eating some just gives you cravings to go out and buy more, though, it's probably not worth it.

Re: Nuts Aint working for me...

I get the unsalted, raw almonds, walnuts and pecans in the produce section of my grocery store then weigh them out before munching. Works fine, and I'm always surprized how much an ounce is. I get triggered by the salty and greasy of the roasted nuts. Now I do fine with packaged pumpkin seeds if I check the label and KNOW they weren't roasted with flour. David's is good for that, but Planter's tsk tsk shame on them. Sunflower seeds are fine in the shell (for me) but again the roasted, salty greasy in the jar might as well be a bag o' chips. pfffffffft

I figured out that's how I binged on that half pound of hard salami yesterday, salty/greasy. Yep.

Re: Nuts Aint working for me...

I know nuts make me bloat. They don't trigger or stall me but I bloat very badly. Because of this I only have them every now and then as a treat. I have a jar of peanut butter still in my kitchen from when I was on the nut rung.

If I was you I would try another nut and see if the samething happens. Also as RosieC said, freeze them in portion sizes. It is really hard to eat frozen nuts, no matter how much you want them .

                Good luck.

You could also try using nut flours in recipes instead of eating them whole. If the whole recipe uses say one cup of nut flour but makes 16 servings then each serving will only have one tablespoon of the nuts in it and as it is mixed with other stuff like maybe eggs/cream/flax etc might not trigger any inclination to eat too much.

I used to have a problem with peanut butter. It just tasted too good and I had portion controls- actually had to ask DH to hide the jar. I don't plan to eat any in the future, however it might be ok in a recipe (like low carb PB cookies). I've made things with almond flour in the past and they tasted fantastic without triggering any cravings.

I'd skip the rung if it's causing problems with your WoE.
