  • Nuts not working...moving to berries

    I don't usually snack on nuts...every time I ate a piece of pumpkin spice bread I made with almond flour (in freezer from Canadian Thanksgiving), I get weird blood sugar fluctuations/cravings. Not really bad, but bad enough where I stopped eating them.

    I seem ok with other things made with almond flour like pie crust for low carb cheesecakes. The 3 minute choco cake with almond flour is not too bad. But the main thing is I don't eat that much for nuts except for an occaisional chocolate truffle from the freezer.

    Last night I made whipped cream with splenda...it was so good with strawberries (about 3/4 cup berries). I know I should not worry, but it tasted sinfully good lol. It tasted better than cheesecake!

    Even at this point, I think the high light of OWL for me was when I could add strawberries in. Yum. The funny thing is, I am now on the higher rung of fruit and don't really want any of those. Go figure.

      Naaah - nothing is better than cheesecake - nothing -

      Remember seeds are on that rung too - flax, sunflower, sesame, pumpkin - lots of good nutrition in seeds. I sometimes eat sesame seeds with my veggies. Sunflower seeds works well in some salads.

        That's true Liv...I've been having flax bread. Maybe the problem I had with the nut rung was certain nuts or certain recipes.

        You know what's better than cheesecake or strawberries with whipped cream?

        Strawberries & whipped cream on top of cheesecake. shhhh...you didn't hear me say that!

              They sure are. The best part is they don't mess up my blood sugar or give me cravings, I'm very happy about that!

                And 5 net carbs of strawberries are a pretty good serving size too!!
                Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

                  I get to go NUTS next week! OK, I'm already nuts, but I finally get to have them next week. They are treacherous for me! I have to measure very carefully. It is the one area that I can definitely get carried away with. Already planning to get some almond and macadamia nuts to have on hand and pre-measured out.

                  Just started on OWL 2 this week. Kind of going back and forth between cottage cheese and greek yogurt. Can't wait until I get to add berries in with it.

                    i get on OWL next 3 days!! i cannot wait to start adding fruit. the first time i did atkins and messed up- i went grocery shopping and bought SO MUCH FRUIT I LOVE FRUIT!!! all of it!!! i miss it so ... any way, i would love to just buy some chopped almonds and slice me up some strawberries and mix them all up. maybe add some cream to it. oh just a small bowl of that right now would hit the spot!

                      Hi Sarah, Have you been reading the book? The reason I ask is I noted on the 25th that you were on Day 3 of induction. That means that you should be getting close to OWL yes, but you start with Rung 1 which is adding more Vegetables (not fruit yet, thats rung 4). Make sure you study OWL before starting it. It will be the key to your continued loss and maintaining your loss when you reach goal.

                        COngrats on discovering the berries rung. I can't do strawberries cause that 5 net gram serving just wasn't enough for me and I had beery cravings after eating it, but I can do blueberries, blackberries and raspberries no porblem.

                        If you have frozen berries a great treat is to measure out your serving size and then measure out your cream allotment and if you think berries need sweetner your add your sweetner to the cream and then drizzle over your berries tossing them to coat. You get a cream coating on the outside of each frozen berry so it is like eating berrie icecream each time you put one in your mouth .

                        Or you can purree your frozen berries and drizzle in the cream and have berry sherbet.

                        As to the nuts instead of using your nuts as flour where most of the nutriants Dr Atkins recommends nuts for have been removed try eating them as whole nuts either added to your veggies or as a snack. Most of the antioxidents and vits are in the skins of the nuts so if you have white almond flour your missing them.


                        DOn't by canned salted nuts cause most of us have to finish the can which is part of the human need to finish things and over eat our portion. ;(

                        I buy nuts raw and store them in the freezer then I get a measured amount out and fix it however I want those nuts. If I want to roast them I do if I want to flavor them is spices I do if I want to grind them to nut butter I do. that way I have the time it takes to fix the second serving to talk mu self out of eating too many nuts.
