  • How important it is to follow the carb ladder?

I was in induction for 16 days and lost 16 pounds. Today i shifted to OWL and completely forgot about the ladder concept. I started my day with a egg wrapped on a 5gm carb tortilla. During lunch i realised that i should be taking veggies and should go in the order in which it is mentioned in the book. But how significant is this that it should be followed, i know by following this we are reducing the cravings. But does it affect the weight loss?

In Dr. Atkins' experience, most people do best following the Carbohydrate Ladder.

I've seen many people stalled by tortillas.

And one of the purposes of OWL is to also change your eating habits. The first thing you have added is tortillas. This should tell you something!

The OWL carb ladder was built the way it was for a reason.

It adds in the foods that impact your blood sugar the least ... in an orderly fashion.

      Order is good.

A lot of the people I've seen "fail" have done so because they added in whatever they wanted whenever they wanted.

It took me several readings of the book (OK, the OWL part ) and reading a lot of posts here on ADBB to begin to understand this concept.

With the lower rungs I don't know if the world would come crashing down if you did nuts before dairy but from my experience so far with OWL, I think it is very important to save the higher rungs (grains, starches, etc.) for when you are closer to goal. Even beans/legumes (OWL rung 6) slow weight loss waaaay down. Most of my foods are from the lower rungs right now and will be for quite a while.

I agree with Mizski - those higher rungs can be tricky and not the place to start. Adding back 5 veggie carbs which is the first rung is very safe and the best place to start. Grains are worse than sugars
