  • Owl/maintenance

    Hi folks

Can someone tell me how can make the difference between an OWL meal and one for Premaintenance or maintenance?

I have seen some very tasty recipes but I don’t know if I can enjoy them now or if I must wait awhile still.

    Thank you

Have a very Happy New Year!!!!!

An OWL meal works for Pre-Maintenance or Maintenance. A Pre-Maintenance/Maintenance meal might not work for OWL; it depends how many net carbs it has, what is your carb level, where in OWL you are...

If your profile information is correct and you are in Induction, then you probably cannot enjoy these meals (impossible to say for sure without knowing the ingredients).

If you are in OWL, then they might be fine.

Remember that in OWL we add only one new food/ingredient at a time and we eat it no more than 3 times a week.

Are you familiar with OWL? Have you read Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002)?

And often you cannot say just by looking at a recipe if it would work for you in OWL, Pre-Maintenance or Maintenance. You need to go through these phases yourself and try the foods one at a time to see if you should have them.

Are you in OWL? Which rung?

Thank you for the quick answer Georgiana

Even if I have not posted my meals I've been through all the OWL rungs and have reached my desired weight. I really don't want to loose more weight. I'm not sure what my carb level is because at the moment I'm eating 65 - 70 g and don't seem to have any problems.

        As you said:
it depends how many net carbs it has
Is there a reference number by which I can guide myself? If I enter the ingredients of a recipe in Fitday what would be the acceptable amount of carbs for an OWL meal, Pre-Maintenance and a Maintenance.

No, there isn't such a number.

If one has an ACE of 25, one cannot eat a recipe that has 30 net carbs per serving... although the same recipe might work for someone whose ACE is 120.

Many thanks, I'll have an eye open so as not to eat all my cabs in one meal.

And make sure you've tried all the ingredients before.

If there's only one new ingredient... say, pears... the recipe should not have more than 5 net carbs from pears and you should not have it more than three times per week.

If there are more new ingredients, it's better not to try them together.

Then perhaps you should change your Atkins phase on your profile so it doesn't say "Induction".
