Hi everyone! I am on my 17th day of Induction, and I am looking forward to moving on to the rungs of OWL. I am a vegetarian who has been living on egg whites, as well as the appropriate amounts of fats and acceptable carbs, since I started because I really dislike yolks. As you can imagine, I'm getting very bored, although I've found lots of ways to dress them up. I am considering for the first rung, adding in a couple veggie patties instead of an extra helping or 2 of veggies. The patties have a total of 2 net carbs , with 7 grams total carbs and 5 grams of fiber. I have no other source of protein, and I'm worried that if I stick with strictly egg whites for much longer, then I will throw in the towel. Any advice or suggestions is appreciated. I only have 16 more pounds to lose, I am happy with this plan so far, and I'm not ready to call it quits. Thanks so much!

As long as the vegetable patties contain only Owl rung one ingredients (induction-legal veggies) then there is no reason not to add them. If however they contain soy or grains you would do better making your own - you can use egg white a a 'binder' to hold the
As for getting fed up with only egg whites - there is no rule that says you have to eat any eggs at all on Atkins. Any 'legal' food can be breakfast food - I often make extra 'leftovers' in the evening to allow for the next day's breakfast, and we even had a member who used to have beanless chilli for breakfast!Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Thanks for the replies! These are the ingredients, which are not going to work for Atkins, and I know there are some hidden sugars in there, so I guess I will need to figure something else out. I don't have a lot of money to work with, but I will research making
my own patties. Also, I do realize that I don't have to eat eggs at all, but there is no other way to get protein in my diet without them since I don't eat any kind of meat. That's why I was interested in adding veggie patties.
Thanks again for the help!

Oh my gosh!! We so have to be buddies!!
Im a vegetarian too! =D and BOY do I know what you mean!
Its tough, try no butter ither! X_X (every time I add butter I just gain weight, its really weird)
What I do is make guacamole with some yummy avocados (normally around a cup or 2 of them a day, sometimes 3 =P)
Them I freeze it in little nonstick muffin tins and put popsicle sticks on it. Yum.
also sometimes I try just halfs of avocado frozen.. So some reason I really like things frozen.
Something else kinda nice is riced cauliflower mixed in with some eggs, fried.
Or loads of veggies and some eggs maybe cream and butter if you want and just oven it.
Please feel free to message me! =)Ready for change

Thanks so much, thefemalegreenday! I was just reading about the riced cauliflower, and it does sound delicious!! I went to Linda's website and I saw that she had quite a few recipes with eggs mixed with veggies and thrown into the oven (a quiche, I guess?) I am definitely going to try that. I really like the idea of making bulk food and freezing it. And, like you, I love avocados!
It's interesting that you aren't using butter. I'm finding myself using less and less butter, and more healthy oils like canola and olive. Seems like my heart might thank me for the switch!
Thanks again! I really appreciate knowing that you're here, too. I just came across a thread where they weren't being very friendly toward vegetarians and "fake meat." I was getting a bit turned off and feeling disheartened, so your reaching out to me could not have come at a better time!

Re: Vegetarian TIRED of egg whites!
What about tofu? Lots of things you can make with it and there are different types (silken, firm, etc.). Tofu is allowed during Induction as part of your cheese intake.
There are a zillion recipes out there but I found this one for tofu from Megs (not2late) that sounds very interesting.
When you move into OWL there will be more options esp. in the nut/seed rung. For oils, you might enjoy grapeseed oil (all phases); it has a very neutral flavor and high smokepoint. When you get to the nut rung, walnut and other nut oils are wonderful to dress veggies (NOT good for cooking). HTH

Re: Vegetarian TIRED of egg whites!
Dr Atkins had many vegetarian patients and in our FAQ is an email from his head of nuitrtion back when he was alive telling our resident vegetarian how to do induction as one. They recomeneded the TVP frozen "burger" as a protein source. Dr Atkins mentions tofu in DANDR cheeses * section he called it soy cheese but it is tofu. Also protein isolates are allowed so you could use one as a protein source too.
BTW you might want to read up on the Omega 3s before you decide canola oil is healthier then butter. too many veggie oils are causeing folk to be out of balance with their 3s and 6s and too low 3s will slow your weight loss too.by the book atkinseer

Re: Vegetarian TIRED of egg whites!
I think tofu its limited like cheese is, but im not sure. I have it sometimes, but without butter it tastes so bland its almost pointless for me.
its actually kinda funny, I don't like egg whites but I love the yolks.. We need to trade.
Im not sure if your still on introduction, but I suggest moving straight to OWL after the 14 day period, cause its alot easier once you get to have more carbs.
I was eating around 30 carbs before (T_T before I had butter and gained a kg and a half.) then I just decided to down it for abit till I lose a nice amount so that when I add butter back the gain won't be so horrible.
I know what you mean about people disliking vegetarian, it is a hard diet on atkins to stick to but being a vegetarian is a way of life, a very important choice to make, people shouldn't mock that.Ready for change

Re: Vegetarian TIRED of egg whites!
2big4mysize, thanks for pointing me to the FAQ section! I had not yet found that topic there, so I will be sure to check it out.
I did some research on Omega 3's, and what I found (which may be different from what you've read, or even from what you meant,) is that Canola Oil contains about 7% Sat Fat, 61% Mono Fat, 11% Omega 3, and 21% Omega 21. Whereas Butter contains 68% Sat Fat, 28% Mono Fat, 1% Omega 3, and 3% Omega 6.
What I gathered from your suggestion was that I should be eating more butter, and less canola due to needing a higher amount of Omega 3's to continue steady weight loss. Is that what you meant, or did I misunderstand you? If that is what you meant, then I'm thinking I would want more canola, and less butter to get a higher percentage of Omega 3's in Canola.
Either way, I will be taking Udo's 3.6.9 oil blend to get the EFA's I need. Being a vegetarian, I've gotten used to supplementing EFA's to make sure I get enough.
Thanks again for the suggestion, and please tell me if I misunderstood you. I'm CRAVING knowledge, and I really appreciate anyone taking the time to teach me!

Re: Vegetarian TIRED of egg whites!
thefemalegreenday, I totally agree with you! I'm really ready to move onto OWL... I just need to get to the store and stock up on more veggies before I'll be able to. That's why I'm still on Induction.
I think you're right about tofu, so I'll be adding that in as soon as I can. How funny that you love the yolks, and I can't stand them! We DO need to trade. I've been using pasteurized egg whites, and cooking them up in the microwave. It's so much faster! Hungrygirl.com has some recipes called "Egg Mug" recipes where you put the whites, and everything else in a mug, and toss it in the micro! I've got a 1 and 2 year old, so I'm all about doing things quickly. That's why I liked your suggestion about frozen avocado! Quick and easy!
