  • How much? And another question

As I impatiently wait for my ordered book to get to me, I have decided to progress onto this phase, although very reluctantly. I have done so darn well mentally and physically that I really hate to rock the boat, but it seems to be the way I'm supposed to approach (from my reading I gather this) so I figure that the successful people know what this uninformed person doesn't and I'll follow success.

I plan on adding more green beans to my diet since I really do just love them. Would I add another cup to them? If so, I might add just half a cup and maybe increase my lettuce.

Could someone please tell me how much in cup fractions is allowed with the amount of cheese of induction - I have kind of stayed away from that because I'm not a fan but I need to start getting more of a variety in, so I'm ready with my grater to grate off a serving once in awhile.

Last question, I get a terrible taste in my mouth. I drink tons of water now, and have very good dental care so it's not my gums, perhaps the ketosis is still bothering me. Is there any approved mint out there that will do the trick? I checked and all have more then ten carbs but they are alcohol carbs and one neighbor told me that this meant I could have all I wanted and another told me NO so I'm asking you people for the definitive answer on this

I'm going to grow a mint plant just for this purpose, I bet I could chew a mint leaf. Unless it left my teeth/tongue green, in which case I'd better pass.

    welcome to OWL Phase.

Read the stickies at the top of the forum---they will help you a bit until you get your book.

During OWL, we don't add "cups". We add 5 net carb increments to our Induction Menues. So if you were to add 5 net carbs of lettuce, that would be about 10 cups of lettuce. If you were to add 5 net carbs of green beans, that would be about 1/2 cup of green beans.

As for cheese, if you do not like it, there's no need to add it to your diet.

      >>Would I add another cup to them?>>

You add another 5 net carbs of Induction vegetables.

      >>how much in cup fractions is allowed with the amount of cheese of induction>>

1 ounce of cheese is rounded to 1 net carb.

How much that is in cup ... you'll have to grate an ounce and find out how much it is!

      >> I get a terrible taste in my mouth.>>

      A good sign of ketosis.

      >> one neighbor told me that this meant I could have all I wanted>>

      Wrong.

You're still limited to 3 servings of sweetener per day. Sugar alcohols, even in a breath mint, can still bother people.

Chewing mint or parsley is fine.

      Drinking more water can help.

      It will go away, too.

Generally, one ounce of grated cheese is about 1/4 cup...so the 3-4 ounce limit is one cup or less of grated cheese/day.

Congrats on your decision to start OWL now...it is a bit scary, but worth it for the learning experience and variety!

Thanks everybody, and I'm off to buy some parsley - good idea, I didn't know that one could chew parsley for this purpose. And thanks for the info on the cup fraction/cheese question too.

I'm wondering if I should buy a kitchen scale, will I use it enough to justify the cost of a really good digital kitchen scale do any of you think?

9 months later, I still use mine multiple times/day. You could get a cheaper one if you aren't sure how much you'll use it.

'Multiple times a day' sounds like it's an essential item to have for ease and precise knowledge of my carb intake, thanks so much!

                glad you moved to OWL.

                did your book arrive yet?

easy way to measure cheese is buy a block with a known weight. then divid your block into that number of sections. for example if you buy an 8 ounce block of cheese just cut it in half then each 1/2 in half and then rotate the whole thing anc cut a line down the center of all the halves. now you have 8 fairly equal pieces each one is one ounce of cheese. if you buy it by the pound you keep dividing until you got 16 pieces.

Try some of the other veggies while you are in OWL. Now that your taste buds are resensitized to sweet you will be amazed at how sweet some of the veggies are.

remember if you chew the parsley you need to count the carbs in it too so measure out a supply and count it in your daily carbs as you remove a pice from your supply and chew it.

the taste is your tastebuds reacting with the ketone bodies in your saliva. make sure you are drinking your water as that will dilute the ketones in your blood which will dilute the ketones in your saliva. Eventually you will get used to it and not notice it.

1 cup of raw parsley is 1.8 net carbs.

10 sprigs is .30 net carbs.

This is one of the most practical ways to measure cheese. Even if you have an odd shaped cheese (like a log, a round, a ball or a pyramid), you will be able to cut 1 ounce portions, provided you know the total weight.

Parsley is listed as one of the "salad" vegetables on the Induction acceptable foods list.

hard to think of parsley as a veggie after using it as a herb all these yrs.

That's true 2Big, but during the summer when my garden is in full swing, I use the herbs as a lettuce substitute in salads. It's unusual, but tasty. Plus many of the culinary herbs have medicinal properties, so that's a plus.

I also have a recipe somewhere for a parsley sauce, that is more or less like a parsley pesto. I haven't tried it yet, but it's supposedly good on chicken and fish.
