  • Aspartame - Crystal LIght -

Question for those experienced ladies and gentleman........I know atkins doesnt recommend aspartame but has anyone here continued to keep losing with drinking it? When i started i drank 4litres of coke a day and went to Crystal Light Ice tea (im in canada, no splenda option here) and i find its my new addiction. WHich is the better of the two evils. I have wanting to start atkins, i know it inside and out really, to get the last of the lbs off and to give it a try as i have been told my IBS will improve. BUT i cant imagine (as i hate all diet drinks) getting off my Crystal light...

    well anyone? -

I can't drink aspartame because I'm one of those people the Aspartame manufacturer says doesn't exist---it gives me headaches.

Anyhow the best option would be to drink water, which is what you should be drinking. The daily water requirement is 64 ounces plus an additional 8 ounce for every 25 pounds you are overweight. After you drink that amount you can drink diet sodas, decaf teas/coffee, etc.

2Big kicked a 24 can Diet Coke habit when she began her Atkins. Others have kicked the habit as well. Give it a shot and see if you can get off the diet beverage habit too.

I went from 6-8 regular sodas a day to 1 diet soda a day because I hated the taste. eventually I got used to it and started drinking too many of those. I didn't gain weight but I didn't lose much at all either. Now I have 2-3 SIPS of Diet rite 2 or 3 times a week and never drink a whole one just a liitle for taste. I have found my weight loss has increased a little.

I think Dr Atkins emphasises more on the negative/carcinogenic effects of aspartame than the effects on weight-loss.

I also read a scientifici paper a few years back where they fed rats reasonable doses of aspartame and found most of them developed brain tumours.

No, his concerns were about aspartame and weight loss. In the 1992 edition of the book, he explained that he noticed that the patients who had difficulty losing weight were the ones who consumed aspartame "excessively". He defined "excessively" as 3 or more servings per day. It's unfortunate that they edited that part out of the 2002 book because it would have explained the aspartame thing better.

A former associate director of the Atkins Center, Dr. Fred Pescatore, also notes the aspartame and weight loss thing in his low carb diet books.
