  • started owl rung 1 yesterday

Hi just to clarify. I had extra 5 net carbs veg yesterday. Today I go back to my induction amount of 20 net carbs? and tomorrow back up again?

When I get to week 2 I add an extra 5 net carbs of dairy. This takes my total daily net carbs to 30 ? Is that correct ?

    Thanks

It depends. If the veggie you added was "new" to you, that is you didn't eat it during your Induction phase, then you add it every other day to see what effect it does to your weight loss and your Blood Sugar (do the little test in the book for this.) For example, during Induction you never ate artichokes, and you want to add them during OWL. So you eat 5 net carbs of artichokes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. And see what happens to you.

If you are adding a veggie that isn't "new" to you, then you may add it everyday and see what happens. So if you ate cauliflower during your Induction and you want to add 5 net carbs of faux mashed potatoes made from cauliflower to your menu, then you are allowed to eat those 5 net carbs every day.

If you ate exactly 20 net carbs during Induction, then Rung 2 you will be eating at 30 net carbs daily.

However, if you were eating 15 net carbs during Induction (because you didn't use the artificial sweeters, extra cream, more than 2 or two eggs daily, etc.), then Rung 1 you will be eating 20 net carbs, Rung 2 you will be eating 25 net carbs, etc.

So it really depends upon how many net carbs you ate during Induction phase. And whatever that amount was, you add 5 net carbs for Rung 1.

I hope I didn't further confuse you. If I have, ask more questions. I might not be here every minute today, but the others will be able to help.

By the way, be sure to take that Blood Sugar Symptom test in the book. During my OWL and Pre-Maintenance, I found it to be a faster way to see if a particular food had a bad effect on me than to wait for the weekly weigh/measure in. The Blood Sugar Symptom test can detect problems within 2-6 hours of eating a food, in my personal experience with using it.

This can be confusing. Great info Megs!

I just wanted to add that you can stay on a rung for longer than a week (or two weeks!). I did it slow and was on most of the rungs for a couple of weeks so I could experiment with different food on the rung.

thanks both. I desparately wanted to get to rung 1 so I could add more veggies, I love them. So I will be staying on this rung more than a week.

        Thanks for this info.

Good for you. Just remember that you add 5 net carbs of the veg---don't go by gram weight or cups. And it could be of ANY of the 50+ Induction veggies. Don't think for a minute you have to eat 5 net carbs of lettuce. Try out different veggies.

If you find difficulty in getting those additional 5 net carbs, there is a sticky at the top of the forum concerning how to "sneak" those veggies in.

I spent a long time on Rung 1--because I love my veg and I love the variety veggies give to the same old chicken, turkey, pork, fish, beef, lamb dishes I eat. So I also tried low carb veggies that are not on the Induction Acceptable foods list, like watercress, nori (the seaweed used to wrap sushi rolls), some other leafy veggies that I was able to purchase/grow/forage AND find their carb counts.
