  • Coconut oil, how much is too much?

    Hi

Today Ive started using coconut oil. I have replaced olive oil with 3 tablespoons of coconut oil. When I made my mayo I also substituted 3 tablespoons of grapeseed oil with coconut oil, it doesnt taste too good in mayo, a bit of an acquired taste ! The problem is it keeps repeating on me, all I can taste is coconut. How much is too much and has anyone else had the same problem.

    Thanks

I have only use coconut oil to make coconut 'chocolate bark' and the muffin in a minute so am only using one tablespoon or less per serving.
But I have seen posts around the low carb boards suggesting that if you do want to use more you should build up to it rather than having a few tablespoons to start with because of various nasty gastric problems.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

how doyou get it to stay in suspension in your mayo as it is a solid at room temp?

there is no magic in using coconut oil as your healthy fat for atkins. yes it will make more of the ketones and turn pee stixs darker but any short or medium chain fattty acid will do the same thing.

I had read good health reviews about coconut oil plus health benefits, and read it raised your metabolic rate.

Some people claim that but it is not a miracle thing I think.
I think it is good to use fats that will make you enjoy your foods. I like a bit of coconut oil in my tea once in a while.

I love CO. I've been using it in decaf coffee, one splenda, heavy cream and a dash of coconut extract. It's my daily treat, and I count the carbs/net, cal. etc. I've not had any problems with it. I use it to cook with as well. I actually wish it had more of a coconut taste. I buy the organic, EVCO from Iherb website. It's fantastic (even as a moisturizing oil after the shower).

Re: Coconut oil, how much is too much?

coconut oil is a medium chain triglyceride so it is direct liver converted to ketones which gives many low carbers more purple stix so they think they are losing weight eating it cause they don't understand how stix work.

If you want to use it in placew of your other fats then it would be a good thing but if you are eating it in addition to your already eating fats then it is a bad thing for your atkins weight loss.

Personally, I don't use those stix. But I understand what you're saying.

I do add it in place of other fats, I do that to help me reach the amount of fat I need to eat. I don't add it on top of the fats I'm already eating. Getting enough fat in my diet is what I had to work on since, I wasn't eating enough of it. And when I found out about CO from another great low carb site, I thought I'd give it a try. I only use the Organic Extra Virgin CO.
I even give my dog a small amount every morning, he's 96 lbs. and I started out giving him little by little. It has been helping his dry skin and coat. The vet said it was a good idea, it's natural and has helped him out a lot with his dry skin.

cocnut oil will help anybody or any animal that is too low in fats BUT my post was answering the OPs question about how much and the health benefits she thinks it gives.

the only health atvantage it has over other fats is it is a MCT so it is ketone converted but there are other short and medium Chain triglycerides in the diet like butter that replacing with cocnut oil would not be an improvement over since butter is a short chain

I understood your answer to OPs question, it was helpfull to me as well.

On another note, I've been more concerned with more "natural" suppliments for my dog, and even my horse. I don't give my horse CO, their digestive systems are much more delicate, and I don't intend on messing with hers. But for my dogs skin, he has allergies, it seems to help him better than other products I've tried. Plus, his breed is prone to cancers, so I stay away from processed and table foods, although he'd eat anything, I'm sure.

Your answers to the posts on here are very helpful to me. I always try to read yours. I learn something new every time I'm on this site, well, I learn quite a lot. Thanks for sharing your knowlege.
