  • Looking ahead- alcohol

Let me be up front and say no, I am not drinking alcohol at this stage on OWL. I don't even feel like it.

But, I hope to be at RUNG 5 by the time I go on my bday cruise 4/29. I am going with my best friend for our 30th birthday celebration. Yes I plan on eating as usual but I know alcohol will be involved somewhat.

So my question and opinions needed:
Since I know aspartame stalls me (and yes I know the alcohol consumption will too) I was thinking about drinking mostly Bloody Mary's with vodka when I do consume it.

But what would you drink to have a minimal affect?

    Bloody Mary's with some carbs
Vodka and diet (sprite) with none
Rum and diet (coke) with none
    Beer - low carb
    Wine

    Club soda.

If I felt I had to have alcohol, I would have a nice single malt Scotch, neat.

It depends on how your body reacts to the alcohol and there's really no way to predict it.

order less to start as many atkinseers will tell you when they low carb alcohol hits them hard and fast at amounts much smaller then when they wer high carbers.

if you are already having the ingredients in your bloody Mary and can nurse it along for a slower consumption that would be fine.
Becareful of the drink snacks as many folk discover once they start drinking the high carb foods ofered with the drinks seem to some how jump from serving bowl to their mouth without their consent.

Aggressive snacks should be banned. Once you say "No thank you." Those snacks should leave you alone.

I would be highly suspicious of the mix used in a Bloody Mary, especially on a cruise ship.

              A Martini would work.

              My favorite is a Manhatten.

If it were me... A "good" Vodka over lots of ice. With a water "chaser".

Bloody Mary mix, Mr and MRS T, any Tomato juice , V-8, all contain non induction friendly for sure....as to what rung you will be on, don't know, but the mixes I would worry about the sugar for sure!

                    Re: Looking ahead- alcohol

Sorry it's been a crazy weekend and I haven't read all the replies. Well, first off, I plan on bringing on all my own alcohol ;-0. I am thinking about doing vodka water and vodka club soda. If I drank my own bloody mary I would bring my own mix in too.

I unfortunetly can't really drink alcohol straight like a manhattan. I need a mixer.

And thanks for the snacking tips...I plan on bringing a lot of my own snacks and putting them in my back pack by the pool, etc. And I hope the alcohol does not hit me too hard. It def won't be a fun trip.

If I feel the same way now about alcohol, I probably will hardly drink.

Some of the snacks might be okay if you get to the point where you can eat nuts, many bars have nuts (though the bowls might not be so clean, eeek!) and maybe you can ask for pork rinds? I love those when I am craving a "potato chip" crunch and keeps me out of trouble if I have an occasional drink (though I can go months without one). Also I am a huge fan of rum and diet coke. I used to drink screwdrivers way back in my 20's but now I like a nice white wine spritzer (white wine w/club soda) or just white wine (though I am not really allowing myself that just yet). I do love vodka though so mixing that with something would be great. So far my only good mixer has been one of those Crystal Light packets, club soda, and some vodka (cranberry being the best flavor) or with rum (like a cranberry breeze I think its called). When you get to the rung, try a few different mixers over a few different days and see which ones you like the best, don't affect your weight loss or don't make you gain and bring or order stuff for your favorites. Then I think you'll be all set. I find I can often not even have to bring anything with me when I eat out with Atkins, there's always a way to be Atkins-friendly and not ruin my progress and nothing weird has to be done. I love that about this way of eating!

Above all and have fun on your trip! Isn't it great to know you can actually EAT like a human being, eat REAL, luxurious food on a cruise and not gain??? Very liberating.
