  • Hummus serving size?

Ok so I made some hummus using a whole can of chickpeas (just a regular size can), I know that I can expect it to last about a week and a half, 2 weeks tops, since the portions are so small, this shouldn't be to bad. But what exactly is a portion of hummus? I thought I would pop on here real quick and see if anyone knows right off what the portion is. I made it with olive oil, a bit of sesame oil, garlic, and a splash of lemon juice. I know you're supposed to eat it 5 carbs at a time but how much is that? Help! TIA!

Fitday has 1/4 cup (of course, we don't know what their recipe is) at 12.4 total carbs and 2.5 fiber.

For "hummus, commercial", 1/4 cup is 8.9 total carbs and 3.8 fiber.

I suspect the "commercial hummus" is the better one and closer to what you actually made.

Thanks, I checked Fitday too, but wasn't sure which one to go by

The only way to know for sure is to add your whole recipe into fitday (beans, juice, garlic, oil) and then see how much it ends up as.

I agree with Liz. Enter the carbs on the can of chickpeas as a special category food. Then enter the other ingredients you added----you can't just assume that a generic "commercial hummus" will use the same ingredients in the same amounts that you used for the your homemade hummus. Then you can figure out how much 5 net carbs of your hummus is.

Regarding that generic "commercial hummus" nutritional information....

"hummus, commercial", 1/4 cup is 8.9 total carbs and 3.8 fiber.
Here is a link to a "commercial hummus", the Sabra brand of commercial hummus:
          Classic Hummus Nutrition Info

          2 tablespoons = 1/8 cup, so 4 tablespoons = 1/4 cup.

2 tablespoons of Sabra brand hummus has 4 total carbs and 1 fiber grams. Therefore 4 tablespoons would have 8 total carbs and 2 fiber grams. That's different than the generic "commercial hummus" nutritional information. If I recall correctly, the USDA and other nutrient information databases use an average of available nutritional informations for those generic "commercial" products. This means if you follow these databases you may be eating more or you may be eating less than what the product truly contains. This is why it's better to go with what the packaging states in most cases. And if you choose to make your own---definitely figure out the carbs for your recipe rather than rely on information of generic, "commercial" products because you might add more tahini or less lemon juice or more garlic etc.

            Re: Hummus serving size?

move your fitday ahead a day and then enter all your ingredients as eatten foods using your can as a custom food. the total for the day are the total for your entire recipe.

then open another window of your fitday and move the date on the new window back to today.

enter the entire recipe as a custom food. you can get the vits and mnerals from the reports page on the tomoorows fitday where you entered the ingredients.
save your food and then for your portion just figure out how much of your toital recipe you have each time 1/8th of the bowl 1/4 whatever and that will be your serving size when you enter your custom hummas each day you eat it.

remember to delete the foods from tommorrows fitday so you don't accidently think you over ate when you do tomorrows foods tomorrow.
