  • Need Advice

I have been following the atkins way since mid January and have only lost approx. 15 lbs. During induction I lost 11 lbs with no problems. Since induction, which I stayed on for three weeks before being advised to move onto OWL I have lost give or take three lbs. I have been completely dedicated to this and cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. I use the Ketosis strips and those always show dark purple. I am not really excercising much, maybe twice a week. I eat some veggies but not a ton. Sometimes I think that might be the problem. I have also been taking Xanax lately and thinking that may be stalling me.

I often get discouraged but think that I just need to hang in there. I know that this WOE is the best for me but I need to figure out what I am doing wrong. Please help.

How many net carbs are you eating and how many of them come from vegetables?

Since starting OWL, did you add foods following the Rules of OWL? Did you pay attention to how these new foods affect your weight loss and what effect they have on your blood sugar?

      Re: Need Advice

I absolutely followed the rules of OWL. I added 5g three times/wk to see if it affected my weight loss. It seems that I am stalling with nuts. I have not had any cravings when I added them to my diet.

At this point, I am eating approximately 25-30 net carbs. Only 10 realyy comming from veggies.

        Re: Need Advice

You add 5 net carb per day ... so on OWL 1, you would be eating 25 net carbs per day.

You add a new food 3 times a week.

Give up the nuts for a while and see if that doesn't help.

You need more net carbs from Induction vegetables than you're getting, too.

I find the more veggies I eat & the more water I drink, the more I lose. Have you checked out Linda's veggie recipes? My family (not low-carbers) request them for gatherings since they are SO good! I also look for main-dish recipes that include veggies - we like the Mexican Spinach & Hamburger Casserole, Spinach Lasagne & many others.

A couple of my favorite veggies recipes are:
Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes
Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes (I use pepper jack & zucchini)

          Other assorted veggie recipes:

          http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...up-please.html

          Liv’s Cauliflower potatoes

          2 1/2 cups cauliflower
          1 cup sour cream
          3/4 cup grated cheddar, divided
          3 green onions
          3/4 tsp salt

          1/4 tsp pepper
          3 slices cooked bacon

Cook 2 1/2 cups cauliflower until tender but firm. Chop into pieces
about the size of hash browns. Mix 1 cup sour cream, 1/2 cup grated
cheddar(medium is good), the chopped white parts of 3 green onions,
3/4 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp pepper. Stir in cauliflower. Place in greased
baking dish and sprinkle 1/4 cup grated cheddar on top. Bake @ 350 for 20
minutes or until heated through. Crumble 3 slices cooked bacon on top
and sprinkle on the chopped tops of the green onions. Serves 5 at 4.4
carbs each. Reheats well in the micro but freezes really badly.

The green onions & bacon *really* make this dish special!

          Pagliaccia’s green beans

I just put some butter or olive oil in the pot and maybe get a little caramelization on the onions over high heat, then put in the (chopped, think maybe an inch) bacon about a minute before I put in the green beans. Frozen is fine, I buy these huge bags at Sam's club. You can fill the pot all the way up, where you can hardly stir, because those suckers will cook way down after they simmer a long time. Keep an eye on them every now and then, though, to make sure they don't burn on the bottom (every stove is different, especially gas vs. electric). You'll know you're done when the green beens take on the slightest brown tinge, maybe one or two of them even looking brown.

          Italian Zucchini Casserole
4c thinly sliced unpeeled zucchini (17.6 oz)
          1/2c coarsely chopped onion (2.8oz)
          1/2 c. butter
          2 tbsp parsley flakes
          1/2 tsp salt
          1/2 tsp pepper
          1/4 tsp garlic powder
          1/4 tsp basil
          1/4 tsp oregano
          2 beaten eggs
          8 oz shredded mozzarella

Heat oven to 375 degrees. In 10 in. skillet, cook zucchini and onions in butter until tender (about 10 minutes). Stir in seasonings. In separate bowl, blend eggs and cheese. Stir in veg mixture to cheese mixture.

Pour into casserole dish. (I sprayed some olive oil spray on mine to keep it from sticking). Bake at 375 degrees until knife inserted in center comes out clean....about 15 minutes.

Many of us go to 30 or more carbs on OWL Rung 1, 5 carbs at a time. Some of us add a new food one week and more carbs (and no new food) another week so that we can tell if it is the new food or the additional carbs that is affecting weight loss/cravings if issues occur.

How much nuts are you adding?

In the book (Chapter 14, "Power of Five" section), the one food that doesn't follow the 5 net carb rule is nuts/seeds. Dr. Atkins wrote that nuts and seeds are limited to 1 ounce, with the exception of cashews which are limited to 1/2 ounce.

For example, this is what I ate yesterday. I see that my calories are sky high. Could that be a problem. I eat 22 almonds.

                        Re: Need Advice

You are eating too much. You need to watch those portions a bit. Fewer chicken wings, a bit smaller steak. I suggest maybe eating a bit bigger breakfast if you get very hungry. Or have a protein/fat snack in between meals so that you do not end up starving and over eating. Eat slow and deliberate and try to find that point where you are satified and then pack it up.

It is just a bit of an adjustment.

It also helps to have like a plain no dressing just vegetable salad before a meal, that way your already half satisfied.

Heres the thing--just because a food is allowed in OWL does not mean it will work for you as an individual. I have found nuts are a problem for me, except almonds. That is kind of the point of OWL--to figure out which foods trigger you, stall you, etc. Sounds like you made your first find. Cut out the nuts and see what happens. If you start losing in the next two weeks, then try adding one kind of nuts back at a time to see if you can figure out which ones cause the problem. Maybe it is just one kind, maybe more, but you are doing exactly what you should be in OWL by finding out.
