  • Moving to OWL help please!

    Hello everyone,

First let me start by saying that Atkins is true genius! Since October of 2009 I have slowly cut out carbs and managed to lose 10lbs. 2 weeks ago I decided it was time to start Atkins full force (no more dancing around the idea) since than I have lost 4 more lbs and 8 inches all around. I feel great, and my clothes are becoming loose! (Love it!)
So now I am moving into OWL and although I read the book, I am still a little confused! I know I am supposed to add 5g of carbs...so does this mean I add an extra cup of veggies at dinner? Or spread it out through the day?
Can someone give me an example of a basic owl menu through out their day?
This might help me figure it out
    Thanks in advance

    Jules

    Congrats on your loss!

During OWL you add 5 net carbs of the OWL food. So during OWL Rung 1, you add 5 net carbs of any Induction veggie.

You really can't just add 1 cup of any veg, because each veg/food has it's own 5 net carb amount. For example, according to the carb counter in the back of the book, 1 cup of escarole has 0.2 net carbs, while 1 cup of pumpkin has 12.6 net carbs. So you have to get used to looking up the net carb amounts for the foods you choose to eat on OWL and eat those amounts accordingly.

You can eat those 5 net carbs whenever you want. Of course, you want to spread your carbs throughout the day, rather than load them at one meal. But try to get creative with them: have some veg in a breakfast omelette, as a vegetable soup for lunch, or in a sauce for supper or as a snack.

As for an OWL Rung 1 Menu, just make up an Induction menu and add 5 net carbs of Induction veg to it. So, let's say, you want to add 5 net carbs of red peppers to your menu. You can saute those peppers and add them to a mushroom omelette. You can stew the peppers, puree them and have them as a sauce for your chicken at supper. You can slice them into strips and add them to your salad. You can saute them with tomatoes, simmer with broth, and puree into a tomato-pepper soup. Get creative with your foods.

I don't think you should move into OWL. The 5 extra net carbs are gateway carbs and before you know it, you will be eating doughnuts and pizza and pasta without stopping!!

Don't worry guys, jules knows this is sarcasm.......Good for you hun, I look forward to sharing our stories of unbelievable weight loss.

        Welcome to OWL!

          Thanks buddy
Ya I never liked donuts to begin with, so I should be able to stear clear from those bad boys!
What I did have trouble with was stir fry, I read about water chestnuts being high in carbs but wanted to put them into my stir fry last night. I decided not to though, instead just put some beef, grn peppers, mushrooms, onion and some hot n'spicey sauce!! It was soooooooooooo good! anyways...
Im still learning which carbs to add and which to stear clear from and how to spread them out...but I will get there

Did you look up the net carbs?

Someone else's determination of "high in carbs" might not be the same as your definition. Check Fitday or the can to make your own decision.

The Atkins carb counter book has 1/2 cup at 7 net carbs. I doubt you would have 1/2 cup as a serving ... and if you're adding them for your extra 5 net carbs, you could have almost the full 1/2 cup.

And do you really think that a few slices of water chestnuts would ruin anything, since they're allowed on Induction?

Now that you have, how do you feel about adding water chestnuts to a stir fry?
